NEW YORK ISLANDERS

do you think that the radio broadcasts of the games will be on a NYC station next season, since they are moving to Brooklyn ? If so, which one?

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

I really don't think it matters. There are no Islanders fans outside of Long Island, and Brooklyn is basically Long Island.

Not sure those in Brooklyn would agree with that.

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Brooklyn (where I grew up, escaping at age 17) is geographically part of Long Island (as it, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties sit on the same island); however, it is culturally and emotionally so not Long Island, and no one from NY would ever reference Long Island as including anything other than Nassau and Suffolk..

I agree, I was speaking strictly geographically in terms of radio coverage. The same fans that currently go to games at Nassau Coliseum will now have to travel a little farther to see the games, but geographically it's the same region. I don't see the team's move to Brooklyn creating any increase in demand for radio coverage beyond the area already covered. Most hockey fans in NYC proper are Rangers fans and I just don't see that changing with the Islanders move to Brooklyn.

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Not sure why Julius from Philly would care about this, but that is another story for another day.

Come 2014-15, the Islanders will have to find a city frequency that will carry its games. It is possible that the Hofstra FM station (WRHU) could continue to broadcast the games but the team will still need at least one more outlet to maximize their coverage. More than likely they'll buy time on a station just as the other NHL teams already do. But it is too early to speculate as to what station that will be.

Does that make you happy, Julius?!?!?

it does. thanks

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

The Islanders may need to produce the broadcasts themselves, sell commercial spots, and buy airtime on a New York-area station that doesn't have much of a pro sports presence during the October-to-April timeframe.

That's basically and essentially what I said in my post.

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

It doesn't matter where the location is of the person posting the question. I live in Ohio and was very surprised to read Sunday that the Islanders were on one station, and that it was a college station. All the commercial radio stations available in NYC and the surrounding area, and the Islanders have to resort to a small college station, with no other network affiliates.

Julius has a history of posting open-ended questions and/or rants and then adds nothing of significance to back himself up. One of the most annoying posters in that respect. Just go to the Philadelphia radio/TV boards and you'll see what I mean.

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

As bad as the Islanders situation was, does anybody remember the one season where the Montreal Expos English baseball season was only broadcast online?!?! I think Wiki said it was the year 2000.

I remember listening to the end broadcast of one game, and the announcer said something like "until next game, goodnight", and then dead air.

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Announced on-air by Alan Hahn: Islanders-Penguins Game 5 in Pittsburgh on Thu. May 9, 2013 at 7pm ET will be broadcast on ESPN NY 98.7 FM (WEPN).

Not sure if they're carrying the Radio Hofstra feed (with commercials filled in over the underwriting announcements, PSAs and other breaks) or will pick up the Penguins radio feed (Mike Lange) or some other feed (MSG Plus TV audio? NBC Sports Network TV audio? Canadian radio or TV audio?) or will have their own announcers on site.

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Looks like they'll be using the WRHU 88.7 Radio Hofstra feed (possibly with commercials filled in over the underwriting announcements, PSAs and other breaks) judging by a promo aired on WEPN using the Chris King call at the end of Game 4.

The WEPN broadcast is "brought to you by the tri-state Mercedes-Benz dealers".

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Just saw on Evan Roberts' twitter that WFAN is carrying game 6 tomorrow. The Mets are playing a day game (although the forecast doesn't look good anyway).

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

I predict that a NYC radio station will once again be airing the Islanders games, starting next season.

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

CBS Radio/WFAN press release here: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/05/10/wfan-to-broadcast-islanders-penguins-game-6-on-saturday/

Only when the Isles start play in Brooklyn will they be able to vie for a major NYC signal (or at least a syndicate of a few lesser signals). The only reason that the two NYC sports outlets are airing these 2 games is because they're playoff games and the Islanders have shown some gusto by winning Games 2 & 4. If the Isles had been trailing the series 3 games to 1 entering Thursday night's contest, there'd likely be no clamoring for their broadcasts. Unless...the FAN and/or ESPN NY are hedging their bets in case they lose their current properties (Devils and Rangers, respectively) somewhere down the road.

As of now, Autumn 2015 is the target date for Brooklyn, but it's subject to change - could be Autumn 2014.

The Rangers and Knicks are packaged together and they're not leaving WEPN-FM. The Devils could be another issue entirely. The Islanders might be a possibility for WFAN AM-FM since they'll be co-tennants at Barclays Center with the Nets. :)

Re: NEW YORK ISLANDERS

very simply. they play well and a NYC station will pick them up.

as for the "small college station"-- WRHU is doing a good job and the signal covers their key market area for the Isles.

it is fun to listen to all the "the play of the game is underwritten by a grant from xxx"
the mvp is made possible by a xxxx
