New York Jets radio to WAXQ Q104.3 for the 2024 season as ESPN 98.7 signs off later this year.

While the Knicks & Rangers will remain with ESPN New York, albeit on the 1050AM frequency next season, the Jets will move with 98.7 FM being ditched to iHeart's classic rock station Q104.3. (Possible Paywall being it's an article from The Athletic)

No AM for the out-of-range Jets diaspora? Or will the team's network be built out to include stations in parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut that Q104.3's signal doesn't reach? Streaming and satellite radio should take care of a portion of the distant fan base, but what of the technophobes or economically disadvantaged?

This is a big story, and if you broaden the view a bit, you'll see that iHeart is amassing a number of local NFL team radio rights. They managed to take away the Green Bay Packers from Good Karma in Milwaukee, and now the Jets in NYC.

What is interesting to me is that Good Karma is making a big deal about it's online streaming. But in point of fact, iHeart owns the biggest streaming platform of all the radio companies. They've been making pretty solid offers to these teams, that combines broadcast (on FM), online (on IHR), and digital highlights that is hard to beat. Obviously Good Karma wasn't able to beat or match it.

The Steelers did similar in Pittsburgh They moved from their prior flagship to Classic Rock station

WDVE also owned by iHeart, The Carolina Panthers are on The Fox, a classic rock owned by iHeart.

Miami Dolphins on WBGG, a classic rock station owned by iHeart.

How is this different from last year? They are moving from one FM to another.

It's different because they are now on a classic rock music station. But that's the case in quite a few markets. The Rangers and Knicks stay with Good Karma on 1050 AM. What happens when the Knicks and Rangers are playing on the same night? One team gets shunted just to streaming, or will Good Karma have a deal with another AM to pick up the game?

I misread the original post, which reads to me like the Jets were on 1050 along with the Knicks and Rangers. I've been away from Connecticut since December 2021 and didn't realize that the Jets had left AM since then.

The Jets left 1050 AM after the 2011 season.
98.7 started simulcasting 1050 on May 1, 2012 until September 7, 2012 when 1050 became ESPN Deportes.

That's weird. I can't believe I didn't hear Jets games on radio in Connecticut after 2011. 104.3 doesn't make the trip to central Connecticut, I'm positive about that. Have there been Connecticut AMs carrying Jets games since the team left 1050?

Don't forget the Commanders. Don Geronimo might still have a job if he weren't at their training camp last year.
"I'm a Barbie girl, in the Barbie world"
So wait a guy named Geronimo used to work for a team that used to be named Redskins ??....thats ironic.

Why is radio killing itself? FM will become AM. AM will die off and radio will die off.

Radio is not a thing that can kill itself off. It's a device that doesn't live or die. You either choose to use it or not.

But the content on that device can live elsewhere, and that's what's happening. That's partly what this move by the Jets is about.
