New York Mets 2009 Radio Contract

Any word on whether they will be on WFAN next year. The contract is expiring after this year and I think they will go to WEPN or WBBR.

If WBBR scored the Mets, that would really put them on the map. With that said, 1130 AM is basically a 24-hour information for Bloomberg, which really couldn't care less about baseball games interrupting its programming (and thus, its billing opportunities), let alone ratings. So they're out.

ESPN 1050 would really like to score a deal with the Mets. Then the competition with WFAN will really heat up. WFAN will likely move the Yankees games from sister station WCBS over to the Fan.

Although all games are available on TV (with cable), still moving the Mets games to 1050 would be a horrible idea for many listeners in outer areas. I remember when I was a kid, the Mets started on WABC and in '64 I believe they went to 1050 WHN. Living in New Brunswick as you all know means that 1050 was and still is horrible reception, especially at night. So if they did that, one would hope that the Mets would find an central Jersey affiliate (or two) with a decent signal ... Even WCTC would at least serve New Brunswick, Highland Park, Edison, and Somerset to a decent extent. There are lots of NJ areas that would need a better signal.

I would not count WBBR out since they do carry the New York Islanders Hockey games and have been in the past a backup station for other sports teams. If WBBR signed the Mets to a radio deal, they would move weekday afternoon games to another station.

Hopefully the Mets will stay where they belong, on the FAN...I remember back in 87 when WFAN was on 1050, very poor reception at night.

In the late 60s thru the mid 70s WHN 1050 came in good on Long Island. I do not think that is true anymore.

I enjoy being able to hear both the Mets and Yankees. A move by the Mets to 1050 would kill my being able to listen. I hope both teams stay where they are.

I wish the Yankees would go back to WABC. Baseball doesn't belong on a news station like WCBS. There have been many times when I needed a traffic report and WCBS had baseball on. (I can't turn to WINS since they never cover traffic outside the 5 boroughs)

I personally think the Mets will remain at WFAN which is the best place for them. I feel this is all a negotiating Ploy to get a better deal. This has happend before and Mets always stayed at WFAN. It would not be a smart move by the Mets if they went to WEPN because of the station's weak signal. It would also be a bad move by the Mets to go to WBBR because as Bruce said, they will probably put weekday afternoon games on another station. I remember in the 70's when WNEW broadcast the Mets games, they did not carry the weekday afternoon games and some of them were not broadcast on Radio at all. However, broadcasting the Mets games would be a great deal for WBBR. I also do not want too see any Baseball or anymore Sports on WABC and I am a big sports fan. I am a avid listener of Saturday Night Oldies and we have enough short shows due to Sports as it stands now. I remember when WABC broadcast the Yankees games several hours of WABC Rewound were pre-empted as well.

Oldiesking - I remember that in the 1970s there were a handful of Mets midweek day games were moved to WNYC-AM. Back when the Mets were carried on WJRZ-WWDJ at 970 AM the signal was so bad that games had to be carried on WABC-FM or WNBC-FM to cover the entire NYC Metropolitan area.

Moving the Yankees to WABC would make it difficult in listen to games here in New Haven. I'd love to see them stay on WCBS and keep the Mets on WFAN.

Are you saying you have a hard time picking up WABC in New Haven? That would be surprising to me.

New Haven here as well... I listen to Saturday night oldies (only) on WABC, the reception is decent, but not as strong as WFAN or WCBS.

Here's a little question for you. When the Mets were on WABC in 1962, who were the three people who did the pregame show and what was the name of the pregame show?

I remember Howard Cossell and Ralph "Number 13" Branca did a pre-game show when WABC did the Mets game in 1962-63. I don't remember anything else.

'FAN and 'CBS come right up the shore from High Island in the Bronx. I'm assuming one of the reasons WABC's signal is not as strong is that is has to travel across more land from NJ.

One thing no one has mentioned...WABC's night ratings have never been as consistent since they lost the Yankees a few years ago. That being the case, and realizing that BOTH NYC teams are contenders and likely to remain so for years to come, could WABC make a run at the Mets? Or is the Citadel/ABC joint venture too cash-strapped to make it happen?

And might WOR become a player?

Can't see the Mets making a deal that loses them 1/3 of their NY metro coverage, and forces them to make deals with additional fill-in stations to compensate, as they'd have to do if they were on WEPN, WBBR or one of the other more restricted-signal stations in the market. The commercial revenue to the team would be too limited. That pretty much limits it either to staying on WFAN or moving to WOR or WABC...no other signal would get the job done, and I'm sure Fred Wilpon and Omar Minaya know that.
