New York, Oldies Has Returned to . . .

CHICAGO!!!

94.7, WZZN, the former WLS-FM and countless other calls, switched to an oldies format today. Could the legendary calls be coming back to Chicago?

94.7 is ownned by ABC Radio.

How ironic they are airing New York Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel satellite.<P ID="signature">______________

Oldies

Count this move temporary. Until ABC figures out who's buying them, I would not categorize this as permanent.

Maybe there's hope, yet, for NYC to get another oldies station:)

BTW, where is David E., The OldieCat, and others who have said that oldies would NOT return to radio? If my memory hasn't faded, since I'm close to being ignored by radio, Chicago is the #3 market.

We don't know how long it will last, but we will enjoy the music while it does in the Chicago area.

As I stated, we don't know how long it will last, but contrary to what a LOT of people have stated, oldies is back. What did ZZN bill last year compared to WJMK, former Oldies 104.3?

Is WABC-FM taken? What if PLJ became 95.5 Music Radio WABC? Probably would never happen...

No no no no no, Oldies are out, it's time to kill off those boomers. they think they're so great but they're old and no longer wanted.

Not since Karnac have I seen so many perdictions take place. Yea, Oldies is a dead format and no one wants it. See, CBS FM switched in June and it's now September and no one made the change yet I guess you baby boomers are .. Wait.
What'a this about Chicago? And, and they are what? They're going to replace the satelite oldies with what? A local staff? No way, the advertisers don't want it. I don't care if Boomers make up far and away the majority of the population, they're all too old to sell to so they should just go away. No agency's shouldn't bother trying to learn how to sell to them.
It wouldn't surprise me if the same happens in NYC. I'm loving what's happening and we unsophisticated New Yorkers just don't get the appeal of Jack. Y'see. it takes sophistication to appreciate rotten segues and some out of town voice insulting the listener. It's so cool when some wise a** hick tells you how "sophisticated" he is. Well as a native New Yorker I have two words for Jack and his attitude. Can you guess the words I'm thinking of?

yes but dont look for any big oldies revolution, the station that they flipped Oldies was formerly active rock the Zone and it was putting up a mighty one share, something like a 1.3 so there was nothing for it to do but flip.

Hmmmmmmmm do they rhyme with Duck soup?

Oldies

Jack has nothing to do with being "sophisticated". Anybody who has such vile toward a radio format and some sort of inferiority complex about being "unsophisticated" must indeed be pretty simple.

Oldies

Did you miss your reading lessons in 4th grade? I have never, EVER said "oldies would NOT return to radio". Disagree with me all you like, but PLEASE DO NOT try to put words in my mouth I never said.

Chicago Oldies never left

Oldies never left Chicago. WRLL was and is Oldies.

But with your ability to write deceptive teases and skirt the facts, you have a promising career in TV news.

Spoken like a typical New Yorker....

You'll have to forgive me, I only speak English. You must be new here. Other people posting on this board have come to the conclusion that the reason for Jacks failure as of this time is due to the fact that we NYers aren't sophisticated. I disagreed but more than one person agreed with that sentiment. My view is that Jack gets lousy numbers because as a format with the insulting automated voice of Jack and the lousy white boy music selection, it won't work in the multi ethnic/racial world of NYC, where you can hear rock music elsewhere.

It got so bad in here that my on line debating collagues had to bring up one of my weak points and it really hurt my feelings.

The fact that I don't use paragrahs correctly really was below the belt but I am slowly recovering from that shot.

Wow, now what would you have me say? Spoken like a typical hick? This is a NY radio board and yes as difficult as it is for me to admit it, I am a lifelong NYer and do work in broadcasting in NYC (for shame). Forgive me, I am doing my best but what can you expect from someone who lives in the cultural center of the world. (no, not Birmigham, Alabama). We're trying to do everything we can even though we lack Super Wallmarts and stock car tracks here and yes, high school football and sad to say minor league sports aren't the begining and end of our entertainment choices. Please have pity on us. Oh here's a radio note. Jacks 12+ 1.7 in the latest trend. Infinity's reaction, well we're doing well in the other 8 markets we have this format running on. That explains everything.

And how many listeners does WRLL have, 30? More people will flock to FM than AM for music.

I went right from 3rd grade and graduated from Purdue.

You, David, and others have all said in one way or other that oldies radio was a dead format. Excuse me for not going thru all the hundreds of threads on this subject and getting your exact quotes. I do wish I had the time to do it, though:))

LOL!!! In Chicago, Jack is doing substantially lower (edited: removed rating numbers) than WJMK oldies did before it was yanked.

Yes, Jack's doing well in Chicago, all right!

Maybe, but at this time when oldies fans in New York don't have ANY city-based oldies station, we shouldn't be dumping on stations like WRLL --either AM or FM -- that have stuck with the format. And my understanding is that WRLL has been home to some of the old Chicago jocks. So let's give stations like WRLL some credit and thanks. If, like WRLL, one of the AM stations in New York picked up oldies it would be better than nothing and we'd be singing its praises no matter the ratings.
