New York PPM: November 2012

NOTE: Because of Hurricane Sandy, Week 4 was not counted in this report.
Hurricane Sandy apparently made a little boost to the news/talk stations, especially WINS and WCBS, while WINS on WXRK made it go down to an almost year low! WCBS made the biggest, from 3.8 to 5.3 (#4), and WINS from 4.0 to 4.8 (#6). WINS cume goes up about 600,000 to a few thousand shy of 3,000,000, and WCBS goes up about 700,000 to a little more than 2,900,000. Many music stations suffered a bit, especially at the top, like WLTW and WCBS-FM, down .7 and .9. WPAT is at one of the lowest points ever, a 0.9! ;D (Laugh, Laugh.) Quickly about Merlin, IQ 106.9 is now IN THE TOP 10! And they are at a 3.6, while WPHT suffers with a 2.2! Why couldnt he use IQ's strategy from the beginning? I feel like the news/talk war between CBS and Merlin is fought in battles, CBS winning in Chicago and New York, and Merlin edging over CBS in Philly, with that battle not over, YET! Another note, newly bought WOR is up slightly to a 1.9, still mediocre compared to CC's other powerhouse talk stations. What do you think of the results?

I am looking at the entry for WFUV which says it is owned by Kuiper Stations. Is that a mistake? WFUV is owned by Fordham University.

So November is (10/11-11/7/12), which would be only 7 days of WFAN on 101.9 with most of the month being the WRXP Alternative format.

WFAN-AM is not listed. But WFAN-FM is listed as Merlin with WRXP''s prior book numbers in the AllAccess. Allaccess therefore shows WRXP Alternative rock combined with 7 days of sports got a 3.2 for that period.

Not sure what to make of radio-online numbers. Either RXP got a 4.3 or they are combining WFAN-AM and WRXP numbers.

WRXP is not listed in the ratings for that period and I am not buying the WFAN numbers.
They have WFAN ratings listed as August 1.8, September 2.3, October 4.3 and November 4.3.

It is more like that 2 point rating jump is WRXP Alternative rock format combined with WFAN-AM ratings during that period. Either big mistake on Arbitron's part or the two companies are running a little ratings scam.

Arbitron lists the 12+ of WFAN (FM) as 3.1, 3.1, 3.2, 3.2 with the simulcast counted only in week 4 of the November book, which was not released.

Generally, the Arbitron policy is that ratings travel with a format for purposes of trending.

WRXP is separately listed through week 3 of the November book (10/25 to 10/31).

Could not figure it out since both of those site links did not break them out that way. Do you know what the WRXP numbers were for that period?

mikerock, I don't know what page you're reading - from the link I posted above from ****************, this is the line for "WFAN-FM" (assuming it's single line reporting for the AM + FM)-(all months are in reality WFAN's):

Format Owner Aug 12 Sep 12 Oct 12 Nov 12

WFAN-FM N/A N/A 2.8 2.8 3.2 3.2

On AllAccess.com, their ratings line reads as follows: (in reality, Jun 12 to Sep 12 are WRXP's; Oct 12 to Nov 12 are WFAN's)

Format Owner Jun 12 Jul 12 Aug 12 Sep 12 Oct 12 Nov 12

WFAN-FM Sports Merlin 0.6 0.6 1.6 2.1 3.2 3.2

From Arbitron's ratings page (in reality, these are accurate for each station):

Format Aug 12 Sep 12 Oct 12

WFAN-AM All Sports 2.8 2.8 3.2
WRXP-FM Alternative 1.6 2.1 2.2

We can agree that the October 2012 share for WFAN-AM is 3.2 and for WRXP-FM is 2.2.

The simulcast began on Friday 11/1/12, thus the simulcast would technically not be included since Arbitron is not releasing Week 4 of November 2012 (11/1-11/7) (Sandy related).

David Eduardo would need to confirm this (*see his post above while I was typing this post*), but possibly the "3.2" share number listed for WFAN-FM for Nov. '12 is really around ~3.2 for WFAN-AM and around ~0.0 for WFAN-FM. The reasoning would be that since 101.9 became a "new" station, the first three weeks of the period would be "zeroed out" for the WFAN-FM portion of the simulcast since it didn't exist during that time, plus the last week when the simulcast existed now doesn't count (due to Sandy). Since WFAN has requested single line reporting, even they don't likely know the breakout of share/cume for the AM and FM portions (unless they pay Arbitron a fee for the extra data).

Since WRXP no longer existed at the end of the period, their ratings are "lost" as far as the public lists go.
It would be safe to assume that they had a share in the 1.9-2.5 range for the three weeks that they would have been rated.

There are no ratings scams going on with Arbitron along with any radio company; legal action would ensue if that were the case.
The public is not privy to the exact numbers which I'm sure that both Merlin and CBS Radio have obtained via the three individual weekly reports for Nov. '12 along with the (truncated) monthly Nov. '12 report.

I edited my original post a few minutes after I posted it. When I first posted, I checked a few times and kept seeing 4.3 for November and October. But it was corrected shortly after.

I see what you were actually looking at: the Nov. '12 rankings for Nassau-Suffolk which broke out the way you originally had them listed (from Radio-Online).

AllAccess - Oct/Nov are WFAN's #s; Jun-Sep are WRXP's #s:

6/12 7/12 8/12 9/12 10/12 11/12
WFAN-FM Sports Merlin -- 0.8 1.8 2.3 4.3 4.3

Arbitron - all #s accurate:

8/12 9/12 10/12
WFAN-AM All Sports 3.6 3.8 4.3
WRXP-FM Alternative 1.8 2.3 2.7

It would be fair to say that WRXP likely had a 2.4-3.0 share for Nov. '12.

It would be fair to say that WRXP likely had a 2.4-3.0 share for Nov. '12.

Given that the station "went away" part way through week 3, the average for the full measured weeks on 12+ would have been 2.35
