New York Radio Stations Outage

I checked a few minutes ago. WSKQ and WBAI were off the air. Now they are both transmitting open carriers. This would seem to be related to the post below, concerning some stations not broadcasting in HD a few nights ago. Perhaps there is some maintenance work taking place at the Empire State Building

O ok that thought about HD popped in my head but i thought some one was doing something crazy on top of the empire state. like 40 mins ago i was listening to 98.7 wrks and it lost signal i thought it was my stereo the only stations that were still on were hot 97 and x96.3.
then 20 mins later more stations returned from static.
but 97.9 is still off-air

There was a failure of the master antenna on the Empire State Building. All the stations, except HOT-BLS- and CBS went off. They are all on backup transmitter sites right now

I enjoyed getting light rock on 105.1 over power 105 and there seemed to be country on 101.9 RXP could not identify the station. I was listening to RXP at the time in Westport CT comming back to Danbury from my Internship with Cox in Norwalk and it started hiccuping on off on off and then OUT!

WBAI is currently out and for some strange reason with WSKQ on my Insignia, when I go to the channel, it sounds completely static, then about 15 seconds, it comes back to normal and if you go back to the channel, it does the same exact thing?

seems like the analog is off the air but the HD is on. This is how all-digital radio will sound like ;)

These 2 posts just go to show that no one notices the HD off the air except for us, but everyone notices the analog off the air.

As noted on the "dentist's board" & in posts by Barry & sfergie (and Scott Fybush on the previous thread linked below), there's been maintenance of the master antenna at the Empire State Building that was first noticed Sat. night/Sun. morning 10/16-10/17/10, later on Mon. night/Tue. morning 10/18-10/19/10. (Not sure if there was any maintenance/outage on Sun. night/Mon. morning 10/17-10/18/10 - I didn't hear anything unusual.)

Only stations in HD as of this post: 92.3 WXRK + subs; 102.7 WWFS + subs; 107.5 WBLS + sub

Would be funny if 101.9 got better ratings during that period. ::)

That means analog FM listeners only get the static - the main signal's hosed but the digital injection's still working, and when the insignia fades from analog to digital, it sounds as though the problem goes away. You might have noticed RDS was still working, too. (Happened to 90.5 the other week, until they switched to non-HD auxiliary. Bizarre, to say the least.)

10/19/10 Tue. morning update 10:45 AM ET:

The only stations NOT in HD currently (that usually are):

93.9 WNYC, 95.5 WPLJ & 97.9 WSKQ.

Several others don't have RBDS data content scrolling.

from comments of others on the FB it seems that the country station was in fact WPOR (portland). The other station mixing must have been WCIB (cape cod).
I know my spelling and grammar is not 100% but its not my fault if I cannot edit posts after 10-20 min ;)

Could there be some testing going on, in relation to the subject of this article:

"‘15 Penn Plaza’ Skyscraper Could Affect FM Signals"

No...turns out there's a problem with the power divider that feeds the upper and lower portions of the Empire master FM antenna. Most of the stations are running half-power on just the top bays of the master antenna while repairs are being made and replacement parts brought in (some of the transmission line is burned out as well). Other stations are on backup sites. Could take a few days to get everything back to normal...

Last night B101 was killing CBS FM just 25 miles southwest of NYC. I could get B101's HD to show the call letters but not decode fully. CBS usually dominates here.

Is WPLJ completely off the air now? I just tuned to 95.5 and I'm hearing what sounds like a mix of 2 stations - one is some kind of talk radio and in the background I am hearing WNYC (I heard them mention the WNYC call letters several times). All the other FM's are coming in fine so I know it's not a problem with my stereo.
