New York Rocks to a Different Beat.

It has been said on this board and other radio message boards that New York isn't a Rock town which is why Rock formatted stations could only do so well ratings wise.

We have Rock oriented Hot AC WPLJ,Classic Rock WAXQ-1043, JACK-FM (formally WCBS-FM Oldies station), JACK-FM can be considered a Rock station and WXRK-Rock after Stern. We have Adult leaning R&B stations WBLS & WRKS (98.7 Kiss-FM) and the two Hip Hop stations (Hot 97) WQHT & (Power 1051 WWPR-FM).

Without posting Arbitron shares, if you add up the numbers for Hot 97 and Power 1051, they are probably tied with WPLJ, WAXQ, JACK-FM and K-Rock after Stern.

That is a heck of a stretch. However, I do not buy it that New York is not a Rock town.

I would like to see the retur of the real "WNEW, Where Rock Lives" back.

Question: Does/has Infinity done well with its Rock stations? I have always tended to like Clear Channel Rock stations better.

WXTB Tampa
WKLS Atlanta
WYNF Macon
WWDC Washington DC
WEBN Cincinnati
WDVE Pittsburgh
WKGR W. Palm Bch

I'm missiing some others, but I have heard these in my travels and I liked them. Also, they have a few really good Classic Rockers.

I'll do ya' ONE Better! IMO, Greater Media's 93.3 WMMR in Philly Rocks too. NO I don't work there but I enjoy their programming...underneath ALL the static that I suffer through and all!

I'd like to see their brand of programming in NYC. The closest we can get is WDHA I suppose!

Power 105.1 might impress with its ratings but it doesn't impress in its annual revenue numbers, where I believe it ranks number 17. Despite its pathetic ratings, I'd much rather have 'PLJ's audience over Power's (or even Hot 97's) under frankly any set of circumstances I can think of (at least nobody's ever been shot outside 'PLJ's studios! lol).

> I wouldnt say PLJ is a rock oriented Hot Ac, that's the format as a whole. Hot ac's are almost all playing Gavin Degraw, DMB, Lifehouse etc,.......John mayer,.........doesnt make them (plj) "rock" by any stretch.

I did not know WPLJ was "Rock".

you can call any non-rap,non-dance station rock.Go even further-Light FM is soft rock. Why not?

but there are only two rock stations in New York city. The others are POP stations.Yes,pop music can be called rock. Many pop songs have guitars.A lot of today's pop is watered down "grunge"-the grunge kind of singing with a more soccer-mom friendly sound and message. But
are you saying that Nine Inch Nails on K Rock and Pink Floyd on q104.3 are the same as Ashlee Simpson on WPLJ?

no prob goodluck.
btw a carver tx-11 tuner goes on ebay for about 80$ now...

Infinity has owned some legendary rock/alternative stations...though Free-FM has been introduced to kill some of them -

Still in existence:

KROQ / Los Angeles
WBCN / Boston

There's plenty of others, but those are perhaps the two most well known...

Stolen to FreeFM (along with WXRK): WYSP
Taken away for Spanish, the great WHFS / Annapolis

i will admit to greatly enjoying CC's WWDC anytime I'm int he nation's capital..it's a great station...
