New York Times Op-Ed on Imus

In this morning's New York Times, Gwen Ifill, former NBC News correspondent and now a senior correspondent for the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and moderator of PBS' Washington Week, has written an excellent Op-Ed. She happens to be black, and she's also a past victim of the I-diot, who referred to her as the "cleaning lady". But she focuses not on her own situation, but on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

It's a good read, and a must-read for those who insist on seeing Imus' remarks as "no big deal".

Sorry, I don't have the website link at the moment. But it's even worth the price of a paper.

That was a good piece. Well worth reading.

I'm assuming that Ms. Ifill's next op-ed piece will equally denounce hip hop artists who casually refer to black women as "hos?" And she'll then condemn hip hop stations that play artists who routinely use words like ****** and ho?

If she doesn't....if her outrage is only when a white person makes a stupid, insensitive comment, then isn't Gwen Ifill also practicing a form of racism?

For the information of all who follishly bring the rap artists into the picture to somehow obscure what imus said; Sharpton had been going after rappers months prior for their use of similar terms and he had been attempting to broker a piece of sorts between feuding rappers becuase of what has happened in the past between feuding rappers. So as much as SHarpton is a lightening rod in this thing, he had been criticizing certain rap artists for tthe same type of attitude as Imus expressed. Believe me Im not a fan of Sharpton but I believe in objectivity and the guy has not just been trying to stick it to whitey as some would like to characterize here, he's been trying to make many aware of the stereotypes in question and how destructive he feels they are whether they're used by black or white.

Knowsnews,

My guess is that Gwen Ifill doesn't care for the lyrics of certain rap songs that demean women. But Towerbuzz is absolutely correct--she doesn't have to say ONE THING more to have full credibilty on this issue. She is under no obligation to condemn every other racist statement in the history of time. Imus was very wrong and bigoted. For the last time, stop trying to change the subject.

Oh and one other thing--I highly doubt that certain people here who use this outrage by Imus to criticise Sharpton would do the opposite, and would criticise Imus when Sharpton screws up.

Period.

I agree with TalkJim 100%. Sharpton may have been a bit of an opportunist and a self promoter in the past, or at least that is the way the vast majority perceived him. The Brawley incident left his credibility severly tattered. However Sharpton has toned down quite a bit and has managed to become a bit more credible in the past few years, you can agree or disagree with that but Sharpton is NOT the issue here at all.

Again many have allowed their distaste for Sharpton to cloud the issue and increased their desire to give IMus a pass. Sharpton is not the issue. Imus and his mistake are.

Liking Al Sharpton and Don Imus are not mutually exclusive. I've been an Imus fan for years. I met Al Sharpton in December 2003 after rehearsing for his Saturday Night Live appearance. A nice guy.

Who says you can't have it both ways?

You can that is the point Randy.

Most of the people posting are not so in love with Imus or even think he's right as much as they just detest Sharpton for whatever reason. No question for the average, suburban, knee jerk, neo conservative who follows the republican line, Sharpton is someone not to like. The point is that Sharpton has nothing to do with this, he has nothing to do with what IMUS DID TO HIMSELF. That's it. People want to muddy the watres with Sharpton's participation in the situation when it's all abouT Imus and his stupidity.
