New York's Missing Format... Awaiting it's arrival...

What’s the likelihood of a 24 hour Gospel station on an FM stick in New York… Washington is doing well with their AM (WPGC), Philly’s AM/FM (WDAS-AM and WPPZ-FM), and Chicago’s AM (WGRB formerly WGCI-AM), not to mention the bible belt stations in Atlanta, Jackson, New Orleans, Memphis, Little Rock, etc… Do you think New York can handle an Urban Inspiration or Urban Gospel Station?

Actually, WWRL 1600 tried a mostly inspirational format. Not being a big fan of this format, I can't say how well the station succeeded. But about 10 years ago, it was advertised on ads in the subways. Gospel stations in Southern markets with large African-American populations due VERY well. A gospel station on a full-power FM in Memphis rocked to the top of the ratings recently. But I think the owner has to treat the station like any other music format and not put paid preaching shows on whenever a church is willing to pay for the time. This may have been WWRL's mistake. Then an audience looking for music will be disappointed. The top Gospel stations are usually owned by big companies that are willing to forego the quick dollar that preaching shows will bring, and leave that to Sunday mornings only. (CBS owns WPGC-AM in Washington. I believe Clear Channel owns WHAL (Hallelujah) in Memphis.)[email protected]
