Newark, Unlistenable/Marion, Listenable

How come I can listen to a Columbus station just fine in Marion (42 miles away), but in Newark (32 miles away) I get a ton of static? It makes absolutely no sense. Also, I was in Cincinnati a couple of days ago listening to 101.1 The Wiz, and it made me realize that Power 107.5 is still lame.

I'm not good with the engineering side of radio, but most likely it depends on the station and tower and the direction of it.

And yes, Power 1075 sucks. Always has. Well, they were alright when they were rhythmic.

I've encountered that for years in Newark. They do have some local stations out there, but generally there's a lot more interference from buildings and overpasses there than in Marion. You can hear Columbus stations fine in most parts of Newark, just not right near downtown in the car, especially along 79.

The terrain heading out East is also not as 'flat' as heading up North towards Marion. As you head east and south east also you deal with more hills.. and valleys which clobber signal range.

Terain is a HUGE part with FM. Try getting WNCI in Zanesville! Even 175KW has a hardtime getting there 52 miles away. But WNCI in Bellefontaine comes in with virtually no static even with 98.3 in town!

And even with the Bellefontaine Ridge east of town, which often is the death of weaker signals from central or western Ohio. Many Lima stations don't survive past the ridge going down 33, nor do some of the weaker Columbus-area signals.

Everyone here is pretty much on track with what the problem is.

There are 3 ways to improve an FM signal. And only 3:

1.) Move the tower closer to where you want the signal to be. (If you can...)
2.) Raise the antenna height. (If you can...)
3.) Increase the output power. (If you can...)

Sometimes you can increase signal "in the fringes" by lowering power, raising the tower and going to a single bay antenna. But that won't guarantee superior coverage. It might just help in a few instances.

FM transmission is line of site. Put a ridge, a mountain, a hill...or even a high concentration of buildings in the way...and poor reception is guaranteed.

So, if reception doesn't seem right...look for potential terrain obstacles in that area. It's likely the culprit...
