Newburyport's AM station sold

Indeed good news! One of the three partners, Carl Strube, used to own WJTO. Carl has been heavily involved in the music industry during and after WJTO.

Any one know what they paid for it? The story was that it was for sale for 700k just for the transmitter site and license. A few people I knew kicked the tires then said "naw forget it." The station has a history of being purchased for too much money then struggling and being sold again a few years later. Each new owner changed calls. WNBP to WCEA then WNCG Newburyport-Gloucester Your Coastal Home Companion then back to WNBP.

This is going to be a very cool station to watch and it's good to have the NBP heritage call letters back in Newburyport. Yup - they're keeping 'em! Newburyport's a hip, underappreciated market with a good tourist base, fine restaurants and enough of a local revenue scene to support local radio very nicely assuming the new owners didn't have to pay crazy money for it. Strube started in his teens at JTO and went on to ownership there many years later but spent the bulk of his career in the record promotion business. As President of Critique Records, he was the guy that originally brought you the Bob Rivers' "Twisted Christmas," album. Falconi's radio programming resume is very strong. I want to say it started, maybe at KOX or VBF but definately included JBQ, ERZ and most recently ODS. This is the kind of ownership that puts the fun back in radio. I wish them well...

For a time, if I remember right, they dumped those heritage calls for WNCG. Newburyport-Coast-Gloucester.
WLYN also had diff. calls for awhile, WNSR: North Shore Radio.

WNCG was my first sales job right out of college. It was owned by a couple of guys who had worked at WBZ. The studio was right on the Inn Street Mall in the heart of Newburyport. It was WCEA prior, and returned to WNBP when Win Damon purchased the station.. The Newburyport area is a great area.. Smallest city in Massachusetts ! Good luck to the new owners..
