Newcomb out at 1480/Nova M

Apparently the Drobny's wanted him in PMD to make room for Stephanie Miller, and he didn't go for it. KPHX listeners are complaining because of the time/effort/cash he/they put in the bring the station back.

While I really liked Mike Newcomb and hope that they come to some sort of agreement, I like Jeff Farias even BETTER. He announced this morning that he will be doing the PMD show.

Right now there are more posts in this thread than 1480 has listeners.

One can say that about the KFNX thread, the ones pertaining to those rimshot "I need a translator to be heard in Tempe" Phoenix-wannabe FMs, and those about any Gumpdusky-owned AM station as well. ;D

Sometimes I think that if it wasn't for us on this board, nobody would pay attention to these stations.

It's a shame losing a doctor on the radio...especially one who isn't hawking a colonblow product! Oh well, Nurse Jeff and I still long for the days of La Super X on 14~eighty!

newcomb back to 1100

I doubt it, with the conservative fare of Laura and O'Reilly.

Bad new for Peter B. Collins, who loses by far his biggest affiliate, although 1480 may delay him Miller's old late night spot.

Isn't Jeff Farias the MC of the upcoming Kook fest in Chandler?

You know the one run by the holocost denier?

The one that even Charles Goyette bailed on?

Hard to believe there are bigger kooks than the KFNX clowns.

No, it's not being "run by the holocost (sic) denier.

From the 911accountability.org web site:

As a result of the controversy surrounding Eric D. Williams, he has stepped down from involvement in the 9/11 Accountability Conference. The 911 Accountability Conference does not support Holocaust denial, nor does the 9/11 Truth Movement. No speaker listed here is known to have published works related to the Holocaust.

Opinions expressed by speakers, films, and presentations at this conference do not necessarily reflect the views of the sponsoring organizations or 911 Truth of Arizona. We support and encourage an open and respectful exchange and dialogue among all persons concerning September 11, 2001.

Williams was the guy running it, till he got exposed.

Seems he is still there selling his Holocaust (see, I can spell!) denial tracts.

http://screwloosechange.blogspot.com/

http://phoenixnewtimes.com/blogs/?p=261

Those are accounts by people that were there, Farias was the Emcee of the event. I guess its true, if you go too far left or too far to the right, you meet in a weird middle.

Sleep with the dogs and you get fleas.

For whatever it's worth, Farias denied knowing that the guy was a holocaust-denier -- until the New Times article came out.

I don't buy the 911 conspiracy theories, but I also don't buy guilt by association. Williams was NOT "running" this conference. If he had been, he wouldn't have been dropped as a speaker. And he's there selling his 911 conspiracy book, which is also available on Amazon, etc. So is Amazon guilty of holocaust denial too?

The Drobny's are trying to bring in some big new investors and they need ratings, hence the replacement of Newcomb with Stephanie Miller. Time will tell if this is a good move or not. Actually having a promotion budget might be a good move.

You mean putting some flyers on a table under a rock at random downtown events doesn't count??

Time has already told us what the score is with 1480--it's a failure. A promotions budget won't really help, people know that 1480 exists, they just don't care. You can promote garbage all you want, that doesn't mean people will listen. Call me when they get higher than a 1.5.

Good point. So many think that building up with billboards, print, tv, etc., etc. will bring them better ratings. When that small fraction of those impressions tune in and hear Randi Rhodes shrieking, they'll probably not tune back in.

And you know this precisely how? Are you psychic? Have you taken some kind of a survey? Myself, I still meet people that don't know that there is a new liberal talk station in Phoenix after they lost the previous station to a religious broadcaster.

Oh, I get it! You just hate the whole idea of liberal talk. I doubt that you've ever even listened to Stephanie Miller (who is quite entertaining, BTW) or Thom Hartmann (who you just might learn something from). Guess you just aren't part of the target demographic. Don't assume it doesn't exist though.

Why would I bother? Do you need a job?

Oh yeah, and Barry Young and Brucie Jacobs never shriek or fall into the gutter of ad hominem attacks... At least when Randi Rhodes "shrieks," she says something of interest. I haven't heard a word of truth from any of the talking head nabobs at KFYI (or KKNT - what a hoot!) in twenty years.

If KPHX fails it will be due to their 1/4 watt lousy signal that barely makes it to the end of their stick.

Stephanie Miller does do a nice show, and this is a great move. We spoke earlier about a show that could beat Barry Young is his daypart - not that she'll do it on 1480, or with all of Barry's conservative listeners, but she could do well against him on a level playing field.

As to promotions, unless you're marketing it to a local democratic club, you're going to need more Stephanie Miller types to get the average talk listener to tune in. Putting up a billboard that says "The Valley's Liberal Talk" would get the same share of people driving by to tune in as the station has now. Gets pretty expensive. The whole "Air America Phoenix" thing has to go... and it's why no other PT station uses such branding.
