Newly discovered SDR in Haida Gwaii, BC

On 540 khz, NHK Radio 1 was audible. On 2.5 and 5 MHz, WWVH and BPM audible, moderate to weak - stronger on 5 MHz. On 10 and 15 MHz, WWV audible, weak. On 6.765.10 khz USB, Bangkok Meteorological Radio (had to tune to 6.765.05 for natural sound).

THAT is one interesting radio! Just took it for a "test drive". Looking forward to coming back for more.

That SDR is ran by Walt Salmaniw of Victoria, who is up there at Masset until the end of the week. Will be logging in momentarily and checking overnight cx...

It will only let you listen for 45 minutes in a 24hr span. Better be quick on when you listen.

Noted TPs here - JOQG-531, HLQH-558, JOAK-594, JOIK-567.
Also heard BOTH Cubans on 530, Radio Progreso on 640 under a very strong KYUK AK, and KHAR Anchorage like a ton of bricks on 590. I only got to 640 before it shut me off.

This morning at around 11am CDT, there were more channels with hets than without them.

Last night in my brief visit I was hearing everything from KSTP and KXEL to KFI....and plenty in between.

This is going to be an absolute blast for however long it lasts.

I was listening to some west coast stuff too last night. I hope it's there for awhile although crainbebo indicated it may be a short while.

Am in the hospital for a few days with a laptop, and thought I'd give that new B.C. dial a try this past lunch hour. It was the first time I ever used the device.

KFQD 750 from Anchorage was there (with 7:15 time check) .... all news .... good sounding station. My first AK AM, hi.
Next to it (and hetting it) was a foreign language station on 748.

Good stuff; fine plaything. Thanks for the toy there, Gr8 !

This morning's observations...
Even at 11:00AM local, Alaska stations are still loud and clear. Anchorage stations at 800mi are loud and clear at times, and Nome is even clearer at 1300+!!! 780 KNOM is perfectly listenable.
TPs were still in well into the daytime. A loud station with Chinese pop music on 1089 ended up being Liaoning RGD, Shenyang. 200kw. CNR1 loud on 999 (no KOMO at 600 miles). Likely Fujian on 882 with Chinese male talk here and there. Loud KCBS North Korea on 873, but surprisingly not to be found on 819. Perhaps it's off for the night. And some weak rock music on 810, no doubt TP, maybe AFN The Eagle in Japan?
Very interesting SDR!

This receiver providse one of the best examples of daytime skywave I've ever heard, Yesterday at 11:30am PDT, I had asolid signal from KJNP from Northddddd Pole, AK for most of my alloted 40 minutes on 1170. I'm guessing at least 700 miles. No fades, but occasionally mixing with a sports talk station underneath (KPUG?). It would take me a week to ID all that's out there on this rig.

And yes, with my few remaining minutes last evening, I did also hear WGN.

Bravo!

Speaking of WGN, it's amazing how much KDWN has been neutered in many parts of the west. Besides this SDR, WGN can often be heard during the winter months on the Hawaii SDR with no sign of KDWN.

aaa

That SDR is the gift that keeps on giving. I forgot to mention that on Thursday night, I also heard KCJJ on 1630, Very weak, but I did get a positive ID. I also heard WGN once again last night (Friday, Sep 23), but weaker than the night before.

I haven't heard a trace of KDWN on the Haida Gwaii receiver, either. Much to my surprise.

This morning was a treasure trove. I was on for about 20 minutes around 10:30 (CDT), 8:30 (PDT). Loads of hets and loads of Asians. Alaskans blasting in,as Crain was saying previously along with the big signals from Seatle and Edmonton. KGO and KNBR also strong. But what was most impressive to me was what I presume was NHK-2 roaring in on 747 (500kw-Sapporo, IIRC). Wow!
