Newly discovered SDR in Haida Gwaii, BC

747 is easy peasy. You could probably get it on a crystal radio there at sunrise. Try for some of the Chinese stations - 837, 999, 945, 756, 639...also some of the second tier Japanese like 1188, 666 and 1503.
I tuned in around 9:30, long after sunrise and still had a few TPs. 1287 JOHR Sapporo was in along with KBS S. Korea on 1170. A very strong HLAZ as well on 1566 (not surprising). Plenty of domestics in and out. 1450 KONP Port Angeles stable but weak with Kim Komando; KDIA was whispering under KDZR on 1640; even KBRE Merced on 1660.

I checked in around 8:30am CDT this morning, pretty interesting. Japan 747 was indeed booming in, as was 774. The Korean on 1170 was dominating presumed domestic stations (KPUG? and others underneath). 1188 was possibly Korea/Japan mix, Chinese on 999. Also noted Alaskans on 750 and 650 and was impressed with the strength of KGO. I'll need to spend some more time with this to get familiar with it, but I hope this SDR will stick around over the winter.

EDIT: Just checked again, am getting KFQD Anchorage with good signal with the Clark Howard Show at 2:25pm CDT (11:25am in Alaska, 2 hours after local sunrise). That's ~800 miles from Massett.

Masset, BC, is almost a total salt water path to Anchorage. 800 miles over salt water for that power level is not unusual.

From a location in SW Puerto Rico right on the shore, I had normal daytime reception of Cartagena, Santa Marta and Barranquilla, Colombia and not just coastal Venezuelan stations but inland ones as well. Even ones at the 5 kw level were listenable with just a loop antenna. Higher power stations were easily heard all along Puerto Rico's southern shore highway which is a few miles inland in most cases. And that is all day, every day.

Around 10:00PM CDT KXEL quite strong and the only midwest station I could hear. Very strong signals from the west coast especially the Bay area. KGO was like a local. Different areas heard depending on what time of the day you listen. Love playing with this receiver.

Mornings are a good time to try this SDR. Sunrise there is currently 8:37am PDT. Most of North America is in daylight well before then, so the band is pretty clear for the Asians.

This morning's highlights were Bollywood music on 576 (maybe India?), VOA Thailand on 1575, multiple Chinese (603, 684, 1089, 1341, 1593 among others), Korea on 711, 1566. This was all heard around 9:30am CDT.

Also, remember this is a good time to check out the Arctic SDR as well. Their sunset is currently 2:40pm (8:40am CDT), 2+ hours ahead of the majority of Europe, so lots of Asians there with little European interference. After hearing VOA Thailand from BC earlier, I heard a clear VOA ID in English on 1575 at 10:30am CDT from Norway!

i was n the Masset SDR this mrning right around their local sunrise. The dial was lit up with stations from Japan and ther points in Asia. JOAK on 594 very strong as was 693. But the biggest surprise was an Asian station (also Japan?), on 1134 that was trashing CKWX, and eventually got on top of it.

As for the Arctic SDR, I had just been thinking this afternoon, that right now would be a good time to start getting more active on it.

The 1134 was very likely JOQR Tokyo, Japan.

Which is very strong this morning at 6:48CDT occasionally getting splatter from 1130 Vancouver.

Yep....blowing out CKWX once again this mo at around 9:20CDT. Thanks, crainbebo, for IDing it.

Japan on 594, 747, and 774 also booming in this morning....especially 594. I also am pretty sure I heard a couple of the Chinese that crain suggested. More details when I'm able to get a better idea what I'm hearing (or not hearing).

774 in Japan sounded as strong as a local when I was listening on Saturday morning.

More fun this morning....around 10:30 CDT.

I finally heard KNOM on 780 and was wondering why it took so long, given that it was booming in with NPR programming.

I also tried some of the channels that crainbebo suggested for China. I "batted .500" with those. 756 and 945 were the best. 873 and 999 seemed to be missing entirely. although 999 was KOMO with a loud het, presumably of Chinese origin.

Also heard the "second tier" Japan on 666...weak.

Thanks again for turning me (and all of us) on to those.

I got to DX on Haida Gwaii just after I logged KENI here. Approx 1437-1450 UTC (7:37am).

First I went to 1503 and found JOUK Akita, with NHK Radio 1, all alone. Over on 1593 there was NHK2, JOTB Matsue with their final program of the night, Vocabulary Rider, in JJ. 1386 was //. Synchros, many 10kw and 1kw relays here. JOKP-1188 was loud with NHK1.
By 1443z NHK2 was signing off with their music box chimes. I was wondering what that lullaby-type thing was on 1125...then my brain fart went away. I will count this was JOAD Naha, 10KW on Okinawa. Other 1kw stations here as well but no synchro effect. 1089 music box was JOHB Sendai with a co-channel.
Final logs - 1035 station apparently s/off'ed and then 1000hz tone. Very weak under CC cochannel. This was probably another NHK2 that instead of open carrier like 774/747, had a locally-originated tone. There are some 1KW and 100W relays here. And with 774 JOUB on open carrier waiting to go off, there was a Chinese co channel. My guess is 200KW Hubei RGD in Wuhan...a city that we are all familiar with now thanks to Covid.
Oh, and 1170 KJNP directly from the North Pole...in Alaska...was in at 20 over. Blistering strong with religious songs.

Fun stuff. Will try again tomorrow I hope.

I don't know if this has anything to do with you not being able to hear KNOM until now, but I checked the Arctic receiver two nights ago and the band was dead. Not a thing from Alaska or anywhere in North America was coming through.

I haven't spent much time on the Arctic SDR thus far into October, but when I have, I've heard precious little from North America. 1130 and 1560 from NYC and a 1390, which IIRC, is from Massachusetts. That's about it. Auroral conditions? If so, I'd expect that to also impact conditions on the BC receiver. So I really can't explain it. No shortage of Europeans, Asians, and stuff from Middle East on the Arctic rig, however.

Other than a few east coasters there was nothing from NA that I could hear on the Arctic SDR. Hopefully, that will change soon.
