Newport TV for sale

I already have a potential buyer for the Newport cluster in mind - Belo Corp (It would be just like them to make such a move)

Cheers ;D

"A deal for Newport Television, if completed, would mark the latest in a new wave of merger activity among local TV station owners. Last fall, Sinclair Broadcast Group bought a total of 15 stations from Freedom Communications and Four Points Media for a combined $585 million. Around the same time, E.W. Scripps Co bought nine stations from McGraw-Hill Cos Inc for $212 million."

Belo? Interesting. Newport has a cluster of stations in Upstate, NY (Syracuse, Utica, Watertown, Elmira, 2 in Binghamton, Albany and Rochester) which would be a new area for them. I can't think of any other company right off the top of my head which could buy the whole group. I would love to see Hearst buy Newport but that would put them way over the cap.

I think Hearst would be perfect to purchase Newport TV. WOAI in San Antonio is a Newport owned station. If Hearst were to take ownership, it would give them a presence in Texas, since Hearst has no owned TV stations in Texas. (surprisingly)

If it wasn't for many of the Newport markets already containing other stations (and duopolies) they own and the Freedom and Four Points deals, Sinclair would've been right in there.

Hearst usually sticks to acquiring top two stations in each market, which WOAI and WPTY in Memphis certainly aren't in any way. WPTY may be the worst 1995 Big Switch station outside WWJ-TV, with turnover which would make a Cedar Rapids station blush.

I thought Sinclair was known for setting up shell companies to get around the FCC station cap

That gets them two in a market. The FCC's not likely to approve a deal that would give them three or four in a market, and that would be a problem all across upstate NY - Sinclair already has a presence in Rochester (1 station), Syracuse (2) and now Albany (2).
