News 96.5 WDBO to be no more

There was a time when Orlando had 4 different sports stations, now they only have 1. I'm not counting ESPN radios move to WCFB HD-2 as a station. It will only be a national feed that one can get almost anywhere, and besides who has an HD radio besides me and a chosen few on this board. So I guess the folks at WYGM can hold their heads up high now as they should be able to stay above a 1 share starting with next months ratings.

That's what happens when live sports goes away.

That elusive younger male demo must be a powerful lure for advertisers indeed if a city like Orlando, with only NBA and MLS pro franchises, could ever support four sports stations. I assume only one or two of these stations were actually talking about either team.

Obviously they perceive more money to be made with Exitos.

And they have no Spanish language experience. The name itself is dated by at least three decades.

And yet Latin CHR WNEZ (and FM translator W287CS) Manchester, CT, owned by Gois Broadcasting, with plenty of Spanish-language experience, brands itself as Exitos 105.3. Is "Exitos" still viable in this northeastern Hispanic radio backwater long after its expiration date in the further-evolved Spanish-language radio markets of California?

It's just a very 40+ way of saying "hits". Neither Hispanic Millennials nor Gen X use the term referring to music.

In the mid 70's it was one of a dozen names I researched for a new Hot AC station in San Juan... I think it was the lowest scoring name we considered. And that was 45 years ago!

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the name. It just is not cool, hip, up to date.

Think of a hip hop station calling past hits "oldies" instead of "old school". Just not with it...

I can imagine a conversation happening where they build a station around this talent Estee Martin.

Stranger things have happened.

This sort of reminds me of how early Spanish language stations in the Southwest came to be.

An owner of a daytimer or high-band AM could not compete any more. They saw an opportunity in serving Hispanics (who were not yet called that!), but knew no Spanish themselves. So they found someone who was Mexican but knew English so they could talk. It did not seem to matter if they knew programming.

The English speaking total foreigner to Spanish language radio hired a PD who had never programmed a radio station. The stations were successful as local Spanish speakers had no alternatives in those days. Later, when the audience became much wanted by advertisers, professionals came onto the scene and the strange stations with strange names and strange formats gradually died.

I'm suprised SBS hasn't jumped on grabbing a station in Orlando. I'm not sure their financial situation is all that great, but they seem to be all in on their Puerto Rico cluster.

It's possible they could replicate some of the success they've had in PR in the market in a heavy 1st generation Puerto Rican market. Granted, Orlando's economy is much better than Puerto Rico's and Orlando is a PPM market, which PR isn't (hence why they do a lot of talk shows in the PR market).

Orlando is not even a top 10 Hispanic market, and that makes it a lot less attractive for targeted national buys. SBS has been walking on the edge for at least three decades, and has been selling radio stations... the last one in Puerto Rico some years ago.

I certainly can't see them going for a rather secondary market where lots of the Hispanics don't use Spanish language radio at all. The Spanish shares are only around a total of 8 points and the market is 34% Hispanic... the lowest showing for first generation Hispanic usage of Spanish language radio anywhere in the US.

Remember first that a huge portion of the audience in Puerto Rico do not listen (or don't listen exclusively) to stations playing Spanish language music. Those who have migrated to Orlando will not listen to Spanish language stations.

Doing what you call "talk shows" on radio replicates much of the successful local TV programming... it is "personality" shows, not "talk shows". It does not have to do with the measurement method but the fact that PR is a unique market, with very unique language usage. It's not that such programming is more or less PPM focused but that it is very Island targeted.

Well good thing I held onto tunein premium. I did listen to 580 for some sports play by play and the superbowl. I no longer have an HD radio. Not worth it to me. I honestly did not see this move coming. Apparently they think a format like that will do well on 96.5. Then again, what else would they have done? I bet a lot of people will just listen on 580. 107.3 is a ral tough signal Especially at night when Jax or Tampa blasts in no problem.

WDBO-FM is no more

I thought by now WDBO every now & then might also acknowledge the fact that they're also on 96.5 HD-2 like ESPN 580 used to do. Perhaps it's too early still. However as of several days ago the calls of 96.5 have been changed to WOEX. I don't think anyone told them down the hall in the other studio on John Young PKY about that, for (unless I'm missing something) 580/107.3 are still using WDBO-FM HD-2 as part of their legal ID.

Is this legal?

Just over 2 weeks after I typed this one up and during their legal ID they are still saying WDBO-FM HD-2 even though the calls on 96.5 have been WOEX. I've listened on my HD radio to it, and the RDS even says WOEX HD-2. Is it legal for an HD-2 to use different call letters when the frequency they are on is something different?

A bit OT here, but I was visiting Palm Bay a little while back and was surprised at how well the 2E pulled 96.5 in down there. I was on the wdbo facebook and a lot of people are not liking the 107.3 signal. I don't know if 580 has the exact coverage of the 96.5 fm signal but 580 came in Palm Bay as well. If people are so against the radio signals, there is always the wdbo app and that depends on your cellular or wifi signal. If you ask me, 107.3 is almost pointless. Heck even on my cc 2e with the antenna up and me being outside, it still has a lot of trouble in Altamonte. At night, forget it. Many times I have had jax or Tampa blasting in. I don't know why cox does not turn off the stereo carrier on 107.3. It's not like they need the stereo bandwidth for that format and maybe a mono signal may help a bit. Not much but a little.

Okay, they finally got their call letters straightened out. But as expected the move for news/talk WDBO from full powered FM back to AM (with translator & HD subchannel) has seen them (I know it's only the overall) fall from a 3.8 to 1.4 (22nd place) in just 2 months. WDBO's stream did not show up.
On the other hand, it looks like the move from HD subchannel & translator to full powered FM has seen WOEX move from a 0.5 to 1.9 (18th place) in 2 months.
And now that they're basically the only "game" in town WYGM has moved up from 0.9 to 1.5 in 2 months.

What a difference a month makes

More like, what a difference another month makes. WOEX's numbers have doubled again, now they're at a 2.8 overall. And WDBO has bounced back to 2.6 overall beating WFLF once again.
In an unrelated to topic, but related to ratings, on the Tampa board our administrator David Eduardo mentioned in a reply to me that WPOZ is encoding once again after taking off for several years. Not 100% sure how that works, but they have not showed up in this months overall Nielson audio ratings. Perhaps they'll start showing up next month. They can't not have any listeners.

WPOZ will not show up as they do not subscribe; Nielsen (and the industry) want everyone to subscribe (note: should be "encode". There is no charge) so that the survey reflects total radio listening. And subscribers (and agencies) will see all the stations. Non-subscribers just don't show in the free sample of 6+ or 12+ data.

Remember that the numbers we see for free are share, not rating. There are always 100 share points, even if listening is off by half! So comparing the September numbers with, let's say, pre-Corona January or February, is not indicative of anything.
