News About This Market

(Take 2)

It looks like nothing's changed yet in this dull market of NWF, we have severe overkill of both country and dance/hip hop

Based on past responses, here are my replies

Country stations are here to stay? Maybe true, however I do see declining numbers for WXBM, "Your Country" seems to be losing it's impact.

HMN could flip to sports at any minute - I agree on that. Seeing that we have these small Ticket translators, a full powered FM station on 107.3 (Maybe 107.3 the Fan?) could knock Hales operation in Pensacola dead. Be the new home for the Jags and Gainesville football!!

I do see some changes to 93.3, they are experimenting with 70s music so, perhaps putting an end to the "Coast" brand and maybe flip 93.3 to 105.5 and put 105.5 on 93.3 to compete with WHWY. (and maybe increase 105'5's tower height, as I don't think they can push it to 50,000 watts)

ZZZZzzzz is doing fairly well, maybe kill the ZZZzzz name to change it to "My 96.5 - Hits of Yesterday and Today" (anyone remember My 107.3)

as for 99 Rock, they seem to have a cult following. The Flame on 103.1 just plain sucks.. I mean The Blaze. They tried to do Blazefest, not sure how well that went.

I can't really figure out the country situation here in the wild wild west. Cat and Highway seem to be showing up and doing well in the ratings but I don't know a single person that listens to either station. Among the people I'm around WXBM is the only country station they tune to on purpose. They're also aware of WKSJ and WAAZ but they just listen to those stations when seek or scan finds a good song... Then they change back to WXBM after a commercial interruption.

I'm in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties 90% of the time now-a-days so Country 105.5 doesn't even exist on my dial. I'm convinced that Country would be on 93.3 if the 98.1 Clusterfudge had never occurred. Of course, Cumulus expected to own Country 98.1 before the lawsuits got filed so putting Country on the 100kw stick and AC on the 50kw made perfect sense in the beginning. I doubt the published FWB ratings include personnel at Hurlbert and Eglin. If Country 105.5 is still king on base, Cumulus may just leave it alone until they figure out how to purchase 104.7.

I don't think 104.7 is going anywhere, They spend the money on the upgrades but it sounds terrible being in mono.

Help a stranger to the territory out here. I came across a station on the Georgia side of the line a few years ago that had "Cat" in the station image. I didn't know if the local high school might have had wildcats or something as a logo.

Is CAT symbolic of something cultural in northwest Florida and/or South Georgia? Does Alabama get in on the picture?

101.9 in Bainbridge, GA was originally called Cat Country. It was indeed named after the local high school mascot, the Bearcat. That station failed and I believe fell into receivership. It's now CHR, Live 101.9. It's a good thing 101.9 wasn't licensed one county over to Cairo, Ga. Cairo's high school football team is called "The Syrup Makers"... no kiddin'... but "Country Syrup 101.9" wouldn't have been the worst name for a radio station.

There are Cat Country stations all over. I'm pretty sure there's at least one in Bama and a couple in Sissimippi and Lousiana. I assume it's just a common name for country stations. Kinda like Kiss, Sunny, Fox, Wave, Hot, etc... Nothing around the Pensacola/Mobile/FWB has anything to do with cats except crazy single women. Maybe 98.7 found a couple cat costumes cheap before they launched the station?

So have you checked to see if the stations with cat in their image are run by cougars? ;D\

Maybe that's their target audience? I think your on to something...

On a side note, ever since TK101 got rid of their Pink Flamingos I believe Cat Country 98.7 is the only radio station in the Pensacola/Mobile/FWB market with a mascot. It's just a generic mascot... why not a Red Snapper, Mullet, or maybe a Pirate?

Hey Poledo - I don't think things have changed, but the bases were counted and helped increase the 99Rock and 98.1 Classic Rock numbers way back when. In fact, it was really crucial for advertising dollahs.

Also, Rob, you mentioned Classic AT40s a few weeks ago, I think and those posts disappeared or nothing posted when I tried to send you a private message for details. Can you message me your email on here on those private message linky things. That sounds so wrong. I can get you a nifty link. Most of the time, the messages on this board haven't worked, so I apologize if I didn't answer anyone. Not intentional.

Tropo should be good this week.
