News Broadcasts -- Too Much?

After today's news about the Pennsylvania Amish school broke, someone told me they think there'd be fewer of these shootings if the news media didn't cover them so heavily.
It's not a new argument, obviously.
But what do you think? Does news on the radio (radio in this case, since it's a radio board) promote awareness of these situations, does it breed copycats, or are people gonna do these things regardless?
 
What are we to do, not report something because it may encourage others to "make a name for themselves" ?

These ^&#$ers were going to pop at some point anyway.
