News Channel 97.5, worst Breaking news coverage ever?

Okay, maybe I am overreacting.

HOWEVER, I don't get AM radio very well in my office ,so 97.5 is pretty nice to have for news during the day. So today was a good day to have it, with the Hurricane horribly hitting the Northern Gulf Coast. ONE STATE OVER. I know alot of people from NOLA came this way. So, my question is, WTF AM I LISTENING TO SOME GOOF BALL ABOUT PICTURES PRINTED OUT ON YOUR PRINTER right now (1-2pm) instead of continuing coverage of the storm aftermath? This WILL BE THE BIGGEST NATURAL DISTASTER in US history, and 97.5 has dropped the ball. Way to go, I hope their ratings suffer horribly. Sucks too, because I liked Backtalk...

pissed,
radioloon

Re: News Channel 97.5...in all fairness...

you're overreacting...

If the hurricane was on top of us, I would imagine that every local Clear Channel station would be simulcasting KTRH and 97.5 would have gone to fulltime coverage, BUT, there was no news other than the repetitious watch until the hurricane struck. I had the TV on til 2 in the morning Sunday night but there was limited new video and story until the unfortunate aftermath became evident. Fulltime local newsradio is no longer a reality...talk shows are pretty much a part of the mix everywhere. I'm just happy that 97.5 devotes as much time to news during drive times and midday as they do...

If by good news on 97.5 you mean poorly reading the Chronicle a day late and badly reading AP copy then they are the place for "good news"?

Hey, if you don't "get" what they're trying to do over there, then quit listening. Their style isn't for every listener. Frankly, I like what they do. It;s different and I find that entertaining. But that's the glory of things--I choose to check out their news from time to time. Like me, you have choices. The remedy is simple---don't listen to that station. But there is one more thing, if you think you can do better, do so.

You know the old saying, those who can't, critique.

I thought it was "Those that can't, get jobs at Cumulus"

I made this post on Tuesday, after it struck, when the aftermath was being known, and new developments every hour. I wasn't asking for a play by play while it struck, It had already struck, and news was trickling out. I see your point but I just thought the could do without the one hour computer show. Thats just me.

Michael, Michael, Michael I don;t make the news. I just report it. If i hit a little too close to home, well I am certainly sorry for that. I just call em like i see em. Now I know, I know. Opinions are just like __________, everyone has one. And that is too true. And I may be that name and many more but the numbers and product speaks for themselves. From there it is up to the world to decide.

>>You are SO funny. Erudite and enlightening. I love reading your comments. Always fair and always entertaining. Speaking of crap...next time you see Ken Charles, remind him of his glorious two months on U106.9 will ya? I love that jab.

Also remind him about that that "conversation"...you know the one, about his always wanting to program a radio station JUST LIKE the current 97.5????? An open, relaxed hip, news talk format was something HE'S ALWAYS wanted to do.

He (KTRH) even tried to hire Jim Corolla after KILT canned him and Corolla laughed in his face and told him that the station had too many problems. He turned them down.

I also know that Pat Fant had to turn away SO many CC employees DYING to defect. But CC, has that ridiculous miscroscopic non-compete in their confidentiality agreements. Cumulus said no way to all comers.

If CC knew not only how many employees tried to jump ship, but the big names of all those who tried to jump ship, they'd be so freakin' surprised. Or maybe not. So many were clueless about that non-compete. Odd, huh?

It's easy to dump on 97.5. They're the new kids on the block. But get your cracks in now. Go ahead and poke fun and make with the jokes. But the fact that the station showed up at all in the Spring book after ONLY being on the air a few weeks, I think, is pretty damned amazing. And the recent trend saw them going even higher. So, laugh now. It has signal problems, but more and more folks are trying harder than hell to listen to them every day.

And what they were able to do...between them and 103.7 in Hurricane Katrina relief fundraising was NOTHING short of incredible. They raised more than 100-thousand dollars. Just two days...just two stations..no TV station help. NO major corporate contributions. This was 10 bucks here, 20-bucks there, the occasional 100 bucks donated from individual listeners. Dedicated listeners. No, it went beyond that, actually. These were die hard "fans".

Call them---the Pruitt's, the Craig Roberts', the Jim Corolla's what you will..dinosaurs, fossils..gray panthers..AARP poster children. The reality is this is a station of Houston radio veterans and they are beloved. Trusted sources of news and entertainment and this city is flocking to the radio alternative they provide. Sorry, but this is the reality.

This is a scrappy little station that's making a dent that will only get bigger. All of you will someday soon, eat all of your words. So swallow 'em down, Fye-Foo-FOO-Doo-Doo.

And when that time comes, I sure hope your throat has a "clear channel".

Re: FOR FYE...

That was the most entertaining thing I've read on here in awhile. What color is the sky in your world? Turn away employees? You mean you don't have any more money to pay anyone. Pam Kelly announced at a battle of the bands event from the stage that she was the new night jock on KIOL. That was over 2 months ago. What happened? Go ask Pat... it's called lack of money. At least Pat can get you a discount on a casket when it comes time to bury both of these stations... which (looking at calendar) should be in about 7 months. As for CC employees you turned away because of non-competes. Since only morning and afternoon talent are under non competes you mean to tell me CC drive time talent was knocking on your door? Keep dreaming. You got a worthless Wendy Miller, a board op, and a prod guy from CC. Yup, prime talent there. Pat yourself on the back for taking those people. Whatever pills your Dr. gave you... keep taking them, it'll help when you are cashing unemployment checks. As for reality... dropping numbers in EVERY daypart outside of morning drive on KIOL and no numbers on KFNC. That is your reality.

I'm laughing my ass off Fo.......I love the truth and your statement IS the true reality.

7 months? I was thinking it would be more like 16 months. Oh well, it's got to be somewhere in that time period. Honestly, what the hell do I care? I'm not even in radio.

At least I will still be able to hear Miss Miller on the mic when I go through my local fast food establishment. LOL! Honestly, I can't believe she burned that bridge with C.C.

And by the way, not that it's a competion, but KTBZ as of now has raised over 250,000 dollars with Rod, Theresa, and Jantzen being on the air non-stop doing requests.(that's dedication in my book) I guess KIOL can't do that because they can't afford the talent to stay on the air, and the GM doesn't want anyone messing with his AWESOME playlist in the computer.

All kidding aside, anyone raising monies for the effort are doing a great thing.
Keep up the good work!

You are one HUGE tool, do you know that? You are an arrrogant pee-rick and I have always hated the way you and your CC co-horts bully everyone on this blog. But that's they teach you at CC A-hole school, isn't it? YOU have no idea what's really going on at either Cumulus property. NONE whatsoever yet like every bloated, adenoid- riddled, blustery, ancient idiot miscreant at CC, you keep spewing forth venom. Because you attack what scares you...what you don't understand. You and the rest of the CC employee roster are all walking, talking characters from a bad Orwell book.

YOUR reality is that you and everyone on this board rags what you don't get. You rag because you are scared. You rag because you are YOU and if I were you and I know who you are, I'd be angry too! You've done nothing...not a GD thing to even earn your own respect. Frankly, I don't know how any of you other there, sleep at night.

Let's talk reality, OK?

A worthless Wendy Miller? Oh REALLY?? Is that you why and KC fought like hell to keep her? Offered her more money? Why you had so many high and low profile staffers call her and beg her to stay? You had one of your drive-time "talents" ( and I use that term loosely) call her and tell her what an awful mistake she'd be making if she left CC. Oh yeah, that means she's worthless. Worthless only because she left the choking, stifling CC stranglehold. You rag her because she chose to leave, yet she's worthless. Is this why she was offered a drive time co-hosting position if she stayed? Huh????

Why did you and others refused to sign off on SOOOOO many of these NON-Existing, no-competes? Do you know how many of your people had to be contacted clandestinely and away from the Cumulus property station in order to keep the lines of negotiation and communication open and out of legal sight? Do you know a cease and desist order was almost issued to keep one such CC staffer from further contacting "other stations"?

My God....You really have no idea about the number of people Cumulus spoke with, do you? The number of people who contacted Cumulus on their own accord???? You are so damn clueless!!!!!!!

Rats always desert a shinking ship or they die trying.

No numbers at KFNC? Are they huge? No, not hardly, but they exist and they continue to climb. You saw this latest trend. That confounds you all over there, doesn't it? That this scrappy little station has ONLY been on the air a few scant weeks and with NO advertising and has been able to get the numbers it has. Numbers that continue to climb...numbers after a very soft opening. Numbers with a virtually non-existent signal.

You know what you're up against and that scares the hell out of you. I, we, all the underdogs, laugh as you quake and we'll continue to laugh--ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK!!! And yes, you're scared. You prove that every time you type a word on this board!!!!!!

Denial. It's a beautiful thing. Keep on thinking with the same head-up-your-rear thought process that you and the other, lackluster, creative-less, droning, boring minions at CC have always had.

It'll be your eventual undoing.

Gee, Mr. Teeth, I guess in closing, I can ask YOU what color the sky is in your world? Probably the same as mine. But the one thing both of our skies are full of?

CUMULUS CLOUDS!!

Shut up, for once, will ya? You don't know everything...in fact, you continue to prove that you obviously know very little and man, I think that's hilarious!!! Real comedy!! It's certainly, far more entertaining than anything I've ever heard on CC's airwaves.

OH? Want me to prove that last statement?

OK, you've got hordes of talentless, frightened people "jocking" on your airwaves. Overworked and underpaid. What little creativity and inviduality they had has been stifled. I can hear the same bland product here that I can in Eugene, OR. No wonder these haggard people continue to call out to Cumulus, COX, Infinity...anyone that'll listen to their cries for help. You've got kids doing the jobs you should hire experienced, talented adults to do, But kids DO work cheap, don't they? I'm surpirsed CC hasn't been slapped with a Child Labor breach.

You've got some of the most boring radio stations in town. Overall, an on-air product that is better than Ambien in my opinion. CC consistently proves that bigger is rarely better.

And I wouldn't be so quick to rag Cumuulus about the age of it's roster. CC has staffers that OPEC continues to eye. You know, potential fossil fuel.

Face, it CC strives on what little power that previously existed on the stations it swallowed up a few years ago. But it had to ammass--what is it--eight or nine Hosuton stations in order to keep it's head above water? Please...

You and CC keep running scared. Actually, it's kind of nice to see that at least, you're part human. To be honest, we all had our doubts.

Re: FOR FYE...

You know how I sleep at night? Laughing when I read these types of posts. Trust me when I say this. Read this clearly... I DO NOT COME HERE FOR RESPECT. I come here for entertainment. It's fun to get people like you riled up. I do it for enjoyment because you are so easy to have fun with. I don't care what you or anyone else on this board thinks of me because it's such a small sample (yes even smaller than the Cumulus audience). Simple people like you put so much credence in this board, when in fact it's about 20 people. Whoopiddidoo! I find enjoyment in knowing that your blood pressure probably went through the roof as you read what I wrote. Why? because I simply don't care.
