First, I thought the LATINO BEAT hosts picked the wrong time to discuss gays in sports. The Mets just played the Yankees and won. This was about two hours after the game ended. If WFAN put this question out to a focus group I'm sure 70% of the listeners would want to hear about the Mets-Yankees game rather than gays in sports. If it was a slow night, ok do gays in sports topic.
I remember a few weeks ago during the MIKE & THE MAD DOG program, Mike & Dog playing airchecks of the folks seeking the overnight gig. When they played an aircheck of TONY PAIGE they both picked on him for picking a subject that should have been discussed later in the show. Picking the right time to discuss an issue is important to the host. The host should plan the right time to tackle certain topics.
And speaking of Paige, enough of the boxing. I know boxing is his thing, but he has to understand what the fans want. Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets, Knicks and Rangers come first. If you asked ten folks at random at PENN PLAZA, I'll bet ya no one knows who's the current heavyweight boxing champ. I follow sports. Don't ask me. I have no clue. Boxing was big in the '60s, '70s and '80s. I'm believe the boxing industry needs to work on many things.
Last, I tried to listen to SPORTS ON WAX. I don't need to hear base pumping music beds under the phone caller. Yes, I'm sure the WFAN heads, MARK CHERNOFF & ERIC SPITZ, want to bring in the youth. I'm not sure if mixing music with sports callers is the right move.
I've tried to listen to 1050 WEPN at night, but they like to add the music beds too. I use to enjoy listening to 90.7FM WFUV's ONE ON ONE back in the day (late '70s & early '80s). They would do the show Saturday & Sunday nights. Great up and coming hosts like MIKE BREEN & MICHAEL KAY. They didn't need to mix music beds. Great hosts will keep listeners listening.
