News from SW La

This forum has been dead for a while...so time to post something

104.9 KZWA suffered a major lightning strike last weekend at the studios...right now, they are on the air from the tower north of Moss Bluff and repairs are underway...The new owners, who got the station under inheritance from Faye Blackwell's estate, have NO clue as to radio or broadcasting. They have announced they will sell the station...for 10 MILLION?!?!?!?!?? WTF???? Its maybe worth 250k......MAYBE

Oh well, thats what happens when NON radio/broadcast people get into radio.....SMH

McNeese's 88.3 KBYS is on the air and doing a very good format for listening at work....no boring NPR, etc...Currently the xmtr is on LaBurge (antenna behind the G I think)...it is moving to the top of the KPLC STL tower downtown....and will be turning on HD soon!!! with HD 2 and 3 channels. More info as it becomes available. (May try to post some pics of the studios, etc....CE Jacob Connor has done a great job)

1310 is in serious hurt...Bruce needs a plot of land for a 1.4 wave tower and radials....but does not want to get screwed again like what happened to his former site that caused the two tower array to come down 4 years ago. IF you know a place that is 400x400 or so ft wide (COULD get by with 350x350 if needed) and could be leased for a 10-20 yr contract and the owner is not an a$$hole who will in 5 years change his mind; OR it can be bought for low costs, PLEASE PM me....cannot be close to Lake Charles due to 1290 Jennings. Preferably north of Hwy 90/Sulphur but not MUCH!!! If an existing tower is present, possibly a folded monopole could be made provided there is room for the 120 ground radials (each having to be 1/4wave long at 1310kHz @ ~180 ft)..Cannot be further west of the city limits of Sulphur and must stay west of Westlake due to 1290....Bruce tried to talk to TownSquare about diplexing into 1470's tower...something I think would be a snap...and the consulting engineer was an idiot....HELL I could design the diplexer to do that....GEESH...may have to call Norm Phillips at TownSquare and have a talk with him.....Would hate to see Sulphur lose 1310 as a LOCAL signal that provides a service...A REAL service....

Well, thats all from SW La for now......more to come as it happens ;)

-.-. .-- forever

For the SW LA listeners, just wanted to pose some questions.

It looks like KLVI has a really good coverage area when it comes to SW La, does KLVI show up in the ratings, at least in Lake Charles?

Also, with McNeese State and UL-Lafayette's presence, does anyone foresee a rock alternative format popping up anytime soon? Even if iHeart Radio buys some transmitters, such as W252AQ and iHeart dubs it as, "Alt 98-3," I think it would garner some listenership. Lafayette's Planet 105-1 is practically a classic rock station now, which breaks my heart because in the late 90s/early 2000s, it was a great alt-rock/active rock station (when it was on 96-5).

I'm happy to see Astros baseball back on the map in SW LA, with KLWB picking up the 'Stros and broadcasting them on the FM dial. Lake Charles' KEZM carries the 'Stros, and while their nighttime coverage isn't all that great, KLWB fills in the gap for the most part to LC's east. Here's hoping KLVI steps up and broadcasts the 'Stros, or KEZM picks up a translator to make up for its shrinking nighttime coverage.

Lafayette has 106.3 that has practically shifted from AAA to Alt Rock over the last year.

iHeart is highly unlikely to buy into Lafayette. It's not in the buying mode right now and is not going to buy a few signals in a small market.

As the other poster mentions, 106.3 should be an option for alternative. Don't know what it sounds like, though. For active rock, you're pretty much out of luck unless you can stomach 105.1. Since 93.7 was divested and went religious, it's your only real option, though Baton Rouge is even worse off now.

iHeart has small market clusters they want to get rid of and can't. THey'll buy a major market station if they can get it, but not a Lafayette, LA.

106.3 is a AAA/Alternative mix with very few mainstream songs (but this seems to be increasing) plus maybe 1 or 2 'gold' songs per hour. I was a Planet listener in its heyday at 96.5 but 106.3 still doesn't cut it for me when I visit. 105.1 doesn't sound so good these days. Too many burned out songs that are still in rotation for the original Planet days and other classic rock songs this 38 yo has no interest in.

For the most part I enjoy 106.3 They spin a lot of songs I also hear on SXM Alt nation that aren't played on mainstream alt stations. 106.3 has helped me discover a bunch of new artist.

You guys have piqued this alt-rocker's interest in 106-3. I'll check it out when I'm driving through Laffy next weekend on my way to see the Saints game. Thank you.

Just came back from my trip to New Orleans, and while the Saints lost in heartbreaking fashion, I heard a lot of good radio this weekend.

I decided to take US 90 from New Orleans to Lafayette instead of dealing with the traffic on I-10 through the Ponchartrain Bridge, Baton Rouge and the Basin Bridge, and let me say the coverage map for 106-1 The Underground doesn't do it justice. You can pull it in almost to Baldwin before it fades.

KYMK 106-3 fights with KXOR, but you can pull it in once you get past Baldwin, but I listened to it all the way to Lake Charles before it faded into oblivion. I was really impressed with KYMK! I heard "The Epilogue" by Crosses, "New Song" by Warpaint, and "I am Just a Whisper" by Brass Bed, in addition to 90s Alt-Rock Gold. Great station.

I pulled in 92-9 The Lake all the way from Morgan City, which was impressive. I also heard 99-5 The Gator in Baldwin, which was also impressive since its tower is a little west of Sulphur.

I also got to listen to my Astros on 97-5 as far east as Welsh. I wish clear channel would let the Astros go and let 97-5 have them. Astros fans west of Houston have 98-3 to pick up the slack on I-10. Southwest of Houston? There is a blank spot there, but that blank spot already exists as 790 doesn't go farther southwest than Rosenberg.
