News Hype (ratings/revenue)

it's disgusting how the cable tv news networks hype war/violence in an effort to gain ratings/revenue. talk radio does it too to some degree, at least on 9/11--- radio and tv did away with commercials and covered the news quite well. (worst comment I ever heard in a newsroom was uttered by a network producer. He wanted Three Mile Island to meltdown so it would be a bigger story. very sick! )

how about the overuse of the term "breaking news"!!!!! (as the cable tv news networks try to out-hype one another!) (in newspapers--- didn't this used to be called "yellow" journalism ? ) (it all reminds me of the film "Network" ! seems to be a thin line today between news as news ---and news as entertainment !)

I hate it when the overdue the weather. Here in Chicago whenever you get one bolt of lightning, it's a total warning of mass proportions on every channel. I am not saying don't do warnings but it loses the effect.

Like the past week, we had excessive heat. Not good , but on one of those days it rained and the temp fell to 85º it was beautiful but they were still going on about the massive heat. This was Sunday, it wasn't till Tuesday when we got real heat.

It's like they didn't want to let it go.

There is the so-called "news judgment" then there's "weather judgment." Both quite often get pretty much out of whack. The news types get on a roll with one story or another and don't seem to want to let it go, either.
