News in PM drive on music stations

I'm sure anyone with an opinion about this will probably disagree with me, but where did the theory come from that if you listen to music radio you don't want news after morning drive? Granted it's an image thing & I'd never suggest PM news on PRO-FM or Hot 106 but what about B101, Coast, Lite, or WCTK? Maybe even HJY where there's no lack of commentary. I'm not talking about anything in-depth since AM radio news on talk stations is only 5 miutes, but quick 90 second headline blurbs in afternoon drive.

The first thing I want when I hit the car after work is traffic. The 2nd thing is a quickie newscast. I really don't think any station going for any audience that doesn't have to be bombarded with music 24/7 can look it as a tune-out if done quickly enough. There's probably no afternoon shift in the state where the mike isn't open for at least a 90-second stretch on a half-hourly basis talking about some fluff piece that may be entertaining but no more or less a tune-out than a quick news blurb would be. Cool 102 does run news (at 5PM I believe) & I've heard it during PM drive on WCOD but don't know what their schedule is. B101 was running news for a period after 9/11 but that ended a while ago.

So is the theory if you listen to talk radio you want the news but if you listen to music radio you don't? I doubt that it's an effort to drive listeners to a brother station on the hour or half-hour.

NBC News/MSNBC has a radio news service in which they run one-minute hourly headline newscasts.

I suspect they would be ideal for music stations, although I don't know if anyone in Providence is running them (here in Boston, talk-formatted WTKK-96.9 broadcasts them).

Were I PD of a music station, I would want to pick them up if the service was available in my market. They do provide a news presence outside of morning drive (as well as in the mornings), and they're one minute long, which I think would be an asset instead of a liability.

I thought B101 was running NBC radio news.I hav nt heard it in a while though.
B101,WSNE, LITE,WCTK and maybe HJY could get away with a 4 and 5 o'clock news quickie. Nothing fancy but a quick 60 or 90 second blur.
HJY,SNE and the Bee could use it as a cross promotion for HJJ news hoping to keep someone listening.

For music stations I like it at :10 & :40 or :20 & :50 in afternoon drive. People tend to leave work on the hour or half hour & need time to get out & into their cars. Both CC & Citadel have the resources to do this & I don't think it's any more out of line than stretching a quick traffic report into a repartee that sometimes goes on too long before anything having to do with traffic is even mentioned. With an average of 4-6 traffic reports per hour & conversations with meteorologists it's amazing that the only news stories that stop the music are the ones involving Michael Jackson verdicts. I think radio is assuming music listeners are brain dead & obsessed only with pop culture. Quick to-the-point ews has unfortunately disappeared from afternoon drive & morning news is usually delivered by someone who is a part of the morning show. There was a time when news people seriously objected to being drawn into the banter but this is an industry of square pegs shoved into round holes & I don't blame the people actually doing it.

The Clear Channel stations in Portsmouth N.H. run the Clear Channel news breaks in the afternoon.WHEB 100 second update,WERZ 107 second update and WQSO 96 second update.

I'm sure if Hjy did the 94 second update it would be stretched out 9 minutes and 41 seconds.

A rocker,a hot ac,and an oldies station. Sounds like a mirror image of CC Providence but without the 93 second,94 second,or 101 second news updates.

John Carpilio should use a street name & do afternon updates on Hot 106.

After 9/11, it seemed that everyone was running hourly updates. That fizzled out after about a year or so. I think 95.5 WBRU is the only station that runs hourly "95-second news updates."

In a way, Charles on HJY keeps the afternoon audience informed about major issues in the day's news, usually with some other random banter.
