News-Jazz-NPR 'DUQ ... R.I.P.

Howard Stern said on his final terrestrial radio show that he was "the last of a dying breed."

I beg to differ; today, it's NPR stations that are mostly focused on music programming.

I've listened to WDUQ online and I'm pretty sickened by this move. And I agree with the comment on Studebaker. He's one of the best. I will miss WDUQ...

If you don't have an HD radio, you might want to try KPLU out here in Seattle for your jazz fix. Their jazz format is similar to WDUQ's.

The website claims to "focus is on sustainable business model". If it's so sustainable, why does it need $millions$ in foundation money?

If you don't have an HD radio, you might ....

Are there more than 3 or 4 people who do have an HD radio?

(Not counting those in the biz, of course)

The better question is, how good is the signal received on those few HD receivers out there. Late at night, trying to pull in some stations because I can't sleep, and I'm doing contortions and holding my limbs in odd places trying to keep a signal from going "this channel is no longer available."

That's a shame because there are some interesting catches in the Pittsburgh HD universe, from the multiple musical forms on the Steel City FMs to the BBC World Service on WDUQ to WFAN New York and KDKA-AM on KDKA-FM.

HDs are useful for non-HD FMs, and I can pull in most stations for which I try to scan in my car.

WDUQ will not go as a pre-set because I also listen to NPR news there, but I can understand ... really understand ... the angst at the loss of a musical form that will be relegated for most listeners to Saturday nights. I had a college roommate who was a jazz aficionado and did a show on old WDFM at Penn State.

There is a Sunday commercial alternative on WHJB-107.1, Jim DeCesare's Jazz Impressions from 9-11 a.m.

As a Duquesne alum, I am very upset about the decision to sell DUQ and let the administration know about it. That and $1 got me a small coffee at McDonalds with extra cream and Splenda.

It's sustainable because it gets foundation money. Jazz probably was too dependent on local support.

Are you serious? You PAY for it and there's no guarantee of the stations staying clear? I really wish you could post that on my friend's FB page - she is being deluged with snobby jagoffs who keep saying "if you like jazz so much, buy an HD tuner."

HD radio is free, you just need a compatible tuner. And it's digital, so it works like your cellphone. Either it's perfect or you don't get it at all.

By "it" I meant the tuner.
