It may be one of the largest single projects ever undertaken in Australian radio.
Over the next three years, the ABC will roll out 70 new frequencies for the ABC NewsRadio service, making it the third largest ABC Radio network after ABC Local Radio and ABC Radio National.
ABC NewsRadio 95.1FM in Port Stephens is the latest station for the network.
ABC NewsRadio Drive presenter Russell Powell is excited that, after 13 years on air, many more Australians will be able to access the station's unique format. Quote:
"ABC NewsRadio delivers 24/7 breaking news, sport, finance, weather and live coverage of Federal Parliament. We bring listeners the most up-to-date stories filed by the ABC News Division's most experienced local reporters and correspondents across the globe. Listeners can switch on at any time of the day or night and get the latest, opinion-free news as it happens.
"Since we started broadcasting in 1994, we have built up a loyal following of listeners who know when they tune in they will get access to a professional, comprehensive news service, delivered by an experienced team of presenters."
The first stage of the roll out, including Port Stephens, will give 1.2 million people the opportunity to hear ABC NewsRadio. Stages two and three will extend the service to a further 3 million people.
Three new stations will come on line each month until 2009, increasing access to the station from 78% of the population to 95%. The majority of new stations will be on the FM band.
