News on 100.3

I don't listen to 100.3 (Knoxville) all that much but currently I'm listening to Neal Boortz show and the station just did the 11am news. It was read by a female voice that sounded strangely like it was computer generated. There was virtually no pause between sentences, and strangely placed voice inflections. Could this really be happening? Anyone else noticed this?

Hmmm... she is the wife of Bob Yarbrough who works at Ch 8 in their morning show. I think she used to appear on Channel 8 as well several years ago. Bob also does (or did) a radio news service for small FM stations in East Tennessee... Maybe that is where she is getting her content.

Ex wife of Bob Yarbrough. Hence, the need to work. Very easy on the eyes, that one.

Don't worry Ed. You're still pretty, too.

If the newscasts are recorded in advance, perhaps she went back to the recording and trimmed off the pauses and/or breathing (or if necessary to insert a retake at some point)? That's not necessarily unheard of... I've seen people do that before. Question would be if too much is taken off that the tempo sounds unnatural, in effect making her accidentally sound robotic.

And again, I'm just guessing here on how those newscasts are done.

I knew that - I just don't want to see local radio start using computer voices in newscasts. You know someone is going to try it sooner or later.

Must have been my imagination then. Now I just hope I didn't give anyone an idea...............

Wrongo. The Weather Channel does NOT use a computer voice for local cable forecasts (the correct spelling of the word). The Weather Channel uses a digital file recording of an announcer's voice, with recorded words and phrases in sequence to fit the various weather conditions of a particular area. During a visit to the Weather Channel in Atlanta, I met the announcer himself and I can assure you... he is not a computer and does NOT have a computer voice.

You are correct the weather channel’s voice started out human, but the computer is pulling up sound files. (No humans required after the original recording). I hope “suits” at one of the “C’s” (CC, CBS, Citadel, and Cumulus) does not read this: but I have always wondered why some one has not taken a “voice” and recorded the typical phrases, intros, song sweeps, time and weather conditions and do what the weather channel does with local forecasts. The RDS could trigger the correct sound file for that song. You could have one voice on ALL stations. After the first sets of file are recorded you could even “part time” this voice to just come in and pronounce the new song titles. Just think the executives who say anyone can do a radio show could even do it themselves. No need for expensive talent!!

It's still hard to imagine something like this not sounding at least a little like Stephen Hawking.
