Barely registers, from what I can tell as a regular listener to both. Occasionally, WOAI will tout having an exclusive story. It's rare to hear KTSA trumpet an exclusive, IIRC. OAI seems to have more news voices in the morning, so I assume they have the larger staff. But their staff sounds on average, younger than the veteran staff at KTSA.
The last enduring spot news around here was the hurricanes last year, and KTSA sent more local reporters in the field. KTSA is local during most daylight dayparts, and despite the smaller staff, they appear more willing to interrupt regular programming for important, but not necessarily urgent, pressers and even Amber Alerts. OAI runs syndicated fare from 9 AM to 4 PM and it's rare that I hear them break into that with breaking news. Maybe most of their morning news voices are part-timers or voicers from other markets?
My general impression is that OAI places a bigger emphasis on Sports than News these days. I believe that's where their promo load seems focused, except for the occasional credibility-stretchers like "More than just the headlines" and "In-Depth Team Coverage" that are a staple of Clear Channel News-Talkers. A couple of years ago, when co-owned KMOL-TV changed its call letters to WOAI, there was all this talk of new synergy between the radio and TV news operations. I sure haven't seen much of it, except for the occasional appearance on the OAI morning show of a News 4 anchor, usually to tout that night's lurid sweeps package.
Maybe the reality is different on the ground at news events, but as a listener, I just don't see them fighting over the same turf so much.
