Did any stations in Canada use taglines like "Eyewitness News" or Action News, NewsChannel, etc? I know CFRN used Eyewitness News for a while.

CKCO in Kitchener used "Action News" for a few years in the 1990s, but other than that Canadian stations have never tended to use the American taglines. Taglines in Canada that I've seen include Newswatch, NewsHour, Here & Now, and 24Hours. Newswatch is still used on a few independent CBC affiliates, and of course NewsHour is still used on BCTV.

Canada has been home to a number of very odd taglines that are no longer used and probably will never be re-used:

Hour Glass - CBMT
Infopack 12 - CHEX-TV
News Service - CKCK-TV
Teleforum - CICC
Scan - CKCO
For Your Information (FYI) - CFPL-TV
Broadcast 1 - CBUT
Here & Now - CBNT
World Beat News - CFTO (this was a local newscast)

We've had CBC Calgary News and Calgary Tonight courtesy of CBRT-TV.

I saw, prior to the BCTV purchase/2001 revamp of Global News, that Global Ontario used the tagline 'Coverage You Can Count On' for a while.

A-Channel also use the tagline 'A-Channel News Now' on all their reports, even coming back from commercial breaks.
______________

The best tag line in Canada, short and simple, comes from City TV...EVERYWHERE!

The Citypulse newsteam "is Everywhere news happens" while City Tv itself is "Everywhere"

If they are legitimately everywhere, it's equally as effective as saying Eyewitness news etc.

According to TV Newscast Titles, CICT in Calgary used "Eyewitness News", then "Action News" in the 60s and 70s, under their old call signs. (Then again, CICT's previous incarnations looked and sounded quite a bit like an American station, using Gari Communications' "Hello News" theme in the 80s and "Where It All Happens" theme in the 90s.)

CHCH in Hamilton used "Newsroom 11" in the 70s and 80s (and used Gari's "Pride Inside" news theme and promo jingle).

In terms of slogans: I think I've seen a video of Winnipeg's CKY using "Coverage You Count On" (without the "Can"). Victoria's CIVI combined the popular "Live, Local, Latebreaking" with their general station slogan ("Out There!") to form "Live, Local, Out There!"; but they dropped it when Hudson Mack came along and revamped the station.

Their evening show was Night Beat News...
Pulse - CFCF
CityNews - CITY which begat ...
CityPulse - CITY from CFCF ownership days.
Hometown News - this appeared for a while on assorted.

Another thing about using the assorted U.S. titles and musical themes is cost.
Canadian stations are notoriously cheap.
Come up with your own 'name', or not, and get some licenced music from some where, and you are away to chase a story...
