News?Talk 1260 Launches October 29 with Michael Jackson

Saul Levine's KMZT-AM 1260AM will flip to News/Talk on October 29.
Michael Jackson, the well-revered heritage talkradio host, will return to his familiar late AM spot from 9a to 11a.
I think LA needs a good issues oriented talk station. If there are enough quality local hosts, and the station takes on a hard-edged news personna, I think it could work.

Nice to hear an icon like michaerl Jackson back on the air, but it's going to be a tough road with that signal. Plus, what will the rest of the schedule look like? I don't give it that long. Saul is VERY thrifty and his AM stations change formats like most people change underwear.

News/Talk is a very expensive venture from start up, but I don't believe that Saul is willing to make the financial investment and effort it will take to make it work. While Jackson is a well known and respected personality in LA, he alone isn't the anchor to build the station around. I think that within a year Saul will be spinning the 1260 format wheel yet again.

I wonder if the News/Talk format will include 540?

It has a horrible signal, day and night. It can not compete with CB radio, let alone the real talk stations in the market.

Isn't that juuuuuust a bit of an exaggeration?

It must have a decent signal somewhere in la-la-land,
even if it's only in part of the San Fernandino Valley.

In other words, for most of LA, it is not listenable. The 10 mV/m daytime covers less than 2.5 million out of the over 10 million 12+ in LA, and at night, the interference free is about 1.4 million.

No exaggeration... it is a horrible signal.

I agree. By itself, it can't really fly.

Here's my idea. Combo programming with KLAA 830. Would help out with the Angels too.

David, what kind of day/night coverage would such a combo have?

Very complimentry, and ends up with pretty good coverage. Not a bad idea!

Unfortunately, Michael Jackson draws a completely different audience (politically) than Glenn Beck and Michael Savage. Talk about oil and water...

My thoughts exactly when I got the bulletin from LARadio.com. If they pick up the programming from KLAA they would fill in the holes and bring in Michael Savage and Glen Beck who might be a reasonable challenge to Bill Handel. Handel is safe but Beck is good and not really heard well in LA unless he gets added to the "new" KGIL

Also I've heard that KABC has some announcements today, so it is getting interesting for talk radio in LA.
