News Talk 98.7 Moving Tower Location....

Just another signal improvement “trick” from the past: In Parkersburg WV a group (Burbach) had an “A” COL Elizabeth WV @ 106.1, 13 air miles and a couple of signal killing hills from Parkersburg, and a “B” WXIL 95.1 (northeast and a few close urban markets only get 50KW @500 feet), in Parkersburg. They swapped COL’s and moved 106.1 to 95.1’s tower. 95.1 has the signal strength to cover Elizabeth, and 106.1 covers Parkersburg from WXIL’s tower. IIRC this did not take too much time. Could Citadel “swap” COLs with WIVK's COL Oliver Springs from its existing tower and 98.7 going to Knoxville with a directional antenna with a null towards 98.5 and a power increase so it can “cover” Knoxville? Citadel can send me my fee care of this board.

Swapping COLs may be doable; I know of 2 cases in Ohio where the tower didn't move an inch but the COL was swapped to facilitate move ins. Where you could physically move 98.7 if anywhere remains to be seen. By tne time they could accomplish it the damage will have been done.

Recent studies have been done and there is no way, where or how 98.7 can upgrade or move unless Citadel buys other properties around the state and moves them to make room for 98.7.

No truer words have been spoken on the subject. Question, Why didn't Citadel just pay Pirkle his fee? Is this not the biggest blunder in Knoxville radio history? I guess time will tell but if it was Hammond's idea I think I would be running for Knox Couty Mayor instead of another county commision seat. Pay would be better and it is not a part time gig.

I don't know if WIVK could serve Oliver Springs as it's city of license from it's current tower location. Isn't 'IVK's tower somewhere out in Sevier county.(the opposite direction). I know they are a full class C, but still Oliver Springs is a long way from their current tower location. I don't know if it would have the city grade signal it needed from it's present tower location.

I have and WIVK puts required city grade signal over the entire city limits of Oliver Springs and maybe Wartburg.

After getting hooked on this thread (Me: "Hello, I'm the Big Bopper, and I am addicted to radio rumors.")

Everyone: Hello, Big Bopper."

(I will never be as funny as TN Cowboy, Bill Battle or GR8 Oldies, but that is my one try...)

Comic mode off:
This City of License thing began intriguing me, so, I checked an old Road Atlas and decided that a viable choice for a COL for 98.7 might just be Powell. Now, I learn from this board that Powell already has a recently-added FM, 94.3. "How did I miss that?" I asked myself.

Which begs the question: Is Pirkle that smart, or just lucky? He moves his 94.3 from COL Oak Ridge to COL Powell a few short years before Powell becomes extremely important to a station that he is head-to-head with in a format battle. And, since someone on this board recently opined that Pirkle was too old to get back into the game, I am thinking the son may be the real brains. Or, the lucky one. Your thoughts?

Thanks for the props, BB. Got addicted to this board upon hearing about Ed and getting an email about these discussions. And found the anonymity good for venting about worthless Citadel stock in the retirement account. We can quit any time we want, right?

Switching COL is just one aspect of upgrading a signal. As you know, all the surrounding signals must be taken into consideration. After reviewing recent studies by an outside engineering firm, it would be next to impossible for them to increase power. Regardless of COL, it is doubtful that 98.7 could upgrade. BUT hey, stranger things have happened.

And for the record, Pirkle got lucky moving 94.3 to Powell. He didn't even discover the new tower location someone else did.

I heard Pirkle built the tower.

Pirkle did not build the tower. 94.3 went on to an existing tower with no other tenants.

Pirkle and Pirkle Jr. are tough to tangle with.

They are the same person, thirty years apart.

One of those Pirkle is really into guns. They are to be messed with.

I was just wondering if Citadel could use 990 AM to simulcast 98.7 FM part of the day or full time? A lot of bigger markets have talk on AM. I am certain the “Ditto Heads” would follow. I know ground conductivity is poor, but 10 KW does cover the market. I do not have the revenue figures for Knoxville, but which stream of revenue is larger talk or sports?
