News92FM...in Stereo?

Probably means nothing, but I noticed at lunch today that KROI 92.1 had the stereo pilot on. They have been in mono since the early days of the news format.

Unless Radio One has some future need for stereo on the frequency?

Or just testing that it still works from time to time. J. P. - left channel, Lana - right channel. That could work.

I'm thinking that they've turned HD off since that can diminish the signal range, hence no HD and mono for all the advantages afforded

Maybe they have a flip coming.

A couple years ago when a San Antonio translator that rebroadcasted WOAI switched to stereo, I noticed and was able to record the format flip to music an hour later.

I agree. I believe a flip is in the making for 92.1.

There's a rumor circulating on a radio board and elsewhere that News 92 is going to be changing formats. Any truth to this?

Nope

Actually, someone did. There was a thread way back when, where someone e-mailed PD Steve Fixx. He said that would suck, or something to that effect, but gave no indication that he knew the flip was coming, whether he actually did or not. That was around September of last year.

I don't think News 92 is flipping. They bill well, don't they? Sure do run a good amount of ads in their daily broadcasts.

What would they flip to anyway? Back to Gospel? Old hip hop like what's happened to KZEP? It just doesn't add up. Newstalk is a good use for the perennial also-ran from Seabrook.

There are two threads on this subject. Allow me to reiterate: Here is the problem that KROI shared with the following now defunct news/talk stations on the FM band. KKHU, 106.9 (U106.9, before they moved to a closer tower). KRTK/KKTL 97.1, (97-Talk-FM) and KFNC 97.5 (FM Newschannel 97.5); all of them were not on a Class C 100KW tower covering all of Houston. You cannot have a successful news/talk station on the FM band unless you get on a Houston stick. That would be almost anything on the Senior Road tower. You have to be able to cover all of Houston. KROI had only 21,000 thousand watts. It operated in mono so the signal could get out further. (We did the same at 97Talk-FM where I produced the Dayna Steele Talk Show while working for Roger Gray.) News 92 had a great line-up of people; as did the aforementioned stations. Without a good signal, it will not work.

Well, I'm hoping for oldies / classic hits. Probably won't happen. But if we get many more LPFM / translators with dubious legal standing, and HD-2's, the need for the format may be filled. But it would be nice to have it done on a signal that covers the metro area. I've always said I would rather have 100 Watts off a 2000 foot tower than 100,000 Watts off a 100 foot tower. KROI is 21000 off a 1700 foot tower, so its coverage is really good.
