I wasn't going to say anything about the article in Sunday's Newsday (Rock Bottom) but I think the writer (RAFER GUZMÁN) is missing something.
Yeah, The Downtown was a great place, but as my bartender friends are quick to tell me - insurance and other costs are way up. Sure, My Father's Place is gone, OBI was bulldozed and I'm sure you can come up with your own list of great clubs and bars that are gone. Get over it.
As to LI bars not supporting local bands; if that were true why have I been to so many shows lately? I went up MetaSin on Saturday night and there was the crew from RADIOX with FIVE great bands with the bands giving props to the radio station for playing their songs. (The station also were promoting two other local shows that same night - in NASSAU COUNTY! According to Newsday, those shows didn't happen because that radio station doesn't support local acts and is "low wattage".
I'm confused. I'm glad RADIOX got mentioned (so did WLIR out in the Hamptons and KROCK/FREE FM - who's local show is now internet-only) but I think Mr. Guzman needs to get out of the office more.
