Newsday, Local Music & Radio X

I wasn't going to say anything about the article in Sunday's Newsday (Rock Bottom) but I think the writer (RAFER GUZMÁN) is missing something.

Yeah, The Downtown was a great place, but as my bartender friends are quick to tell me - insurance and other costs are way up. Sure, My Father's Place is gone, OBI was bulldozed and I'm sure you can come up with your own list of great clubs and bars that are gone. Get over it.

As to LI bars not supporting local bands; if that were true why have I been to so many shows lately? I went up MetaSin on Saturday night and there was the crew from RADIOX with FIVE great bands with the bands giving props to the radio station for playing their songs. (The station also were promoting two other local shows that same night - in NASSAU COUNTY! According to Newsday, those shows didn't happen because that radio station doesn't support local acts and is "low wattage".

I'm confused. I'm glad RADIOX got mentioned (so did WLIR out in the Hamptons and KROCK/FREE FM - who's local show is now internet-only) but I think Mr. Guzman needs to get out of the office more.

Re: Newsday, Local Music & Radio X - Article URL

Thanks, Michael.

What's the old line about "...as long as they get your name right"?

Support local music, huh? -- I guess I shouldn't bother saying anything about "RadioXposed", the show that RadioX does that is nothing but local, unsigned bands (Friday @ 10pm & Sunday @ at 7pm), or Mark Klein's Long Island Blues Warehouse (on Sunday @ 8pm for four hours) or the fact that we sponsor a Teen Night with the North Shore Youth Council every other Friday night - giving kids a place to enjoy new, live bands in a alcohol, drug and violence-free setting or The RadioX/Inside Connection 2006 Spotlight Series that is all about giving exposure to new local acts...well, maybe nobody gave him the URL for the website: www.radiox.fm.

Thanks for the plugs here (as always)!

The thanks go to Don, he found the article. I had not yet had a chance to get to Sunday's Newsday until he mentioned it. The REAL story here is, what does Newsday have against RadioX? Its not like this radio station is a big secret known only to the readers of some obsure radio bulletin board. Its truly becoming a growing local success story. Finally, Newsday does a piece about local music entertainment and they practically blow by RadioX AGAIN. I just don't get it.

Re: Newsday, Local Music & Radio X - Article URL

Stop me if I have said this before, but I spent 45 minutes on the phone with this reporter last summer as JACK-FM was exploding nation-wide and thought that Newsday had everything needed for a nice local angle to the story seen all over the mainstream press.

Wrong!
