Newsplus 1590AM (Jackson)

I was wondering if that's what happened. I remember the talk about that happening when WJDX changing was first posted. I still don't get why Clear Channel would do it. Sell it to someone that would want the frequency.

Not sure if there was a problem, but it seems the signal from 1590 hasn't been as good day or night. Have they been on reduced power or is it just the weather.

Website has no "listen live" or on-air links. I-heart-radio doesn't list it either.

I worked there almost 40 years ago in the WWUN days. Hope this isn't the end.

Hey all -

I called over there today to find out what is going on at 1590 - the receptionist said that "the station is gone and not coming back." She would not elaborate.

Sad: So many great people thru...William Wordsworth summed it up:
" Tho nothing can bring back the hour...
of splendor in the grass...Glory in the flower...
I will grieve not,
but rather, gain strength in that which
remains behind"
RIP, THE MIGHTY 1590!

I spent about 9 months at 1590 during the Y-16 days. I came to do temporary fill-in work, and accidentally wound up being PD. Oops!

Sad to see 1590 go. My guess is that it would have been cost prohibitive to put the fallen tower back up and re-proof the directional array, along with regular operating expenses, etc.

You never know... someone may make Clear Channel an offer and try to bring it back, but making it pay for itself in a market with 35+ signals would be tough.

I've been listening to that station off and on nearly all my life. From W-1, to WCCL country, to its oldies and rock format in the early 80's, adult standards, album rock, heavy metal Z-rock etc. I guess Clear Channel would rather shut it down and eliminate any future competition instead of selling it. Maybe someone should bring back WOKJ, since that is it's original home. I guess the old Jim Walter house can officially become a boarded up crack house.

Mr. JBI could elaborate, should he wish, but I believe the on-air monitor at the old WWUN was a crystal receiver, with the control room window screen for an antenna. Having heard airchecks from it, unbelievably clear HIGH END audio for AM. The only down side was that the cue burns on the singles were reproduced in full fidelity.

The original c/r was about 15 feet from the 5KW tower...overdrove conventional receivers ( and just about everything else), so a simple diode worked fine. We discovered a short wire was all the antenna
needed when we moved the control room later. JBI

I think it was 1969 when I went to WWUN to record a promo for an art gallery opening where my band was also playing. It was very strange hearing myself on the radio for the first time, but it launched a 38 year career of on air, operations and engineering. Sad to see the plug get pulled.
