NewsRadio 1420.com

As good as I think KFYO is (and KFYO is top notch), 1420 is comming together real nice. I spend the last day or so listening, and I am very impressed.
I think this is what Lubbock needs. It is true, they lack some imaging right now. But when you consider that it's being run by a single individual like Dave Walker, you got to hand it to him, he's been able to put something real impressive together. Its not easy to get CBS NewsRadio on the air, I understand they are pretty expensive. If Dave can loop that, it's only a matter of time before he brings TSN over, Charlie Jones, and maybe even heavy hitters like Bill O'Reilly.

It looks like Dave is getting ready to try traffic again.
They also have a website, http://www.newsradio1420.com

Also, check out what they are planning for programming soon:
http://www.newsradio1420.com/newsradio/pageMaker.asp?pageID=3

That's not a bad lineup to start off with!
They still have to tie up some of the midday programming, And I could do a better logo in 5 mins!
That said, I wish Dave well, and I just wish I was in on this thing from the begining, oh well...

Good luck Dave!

I've thought about it, and I could use a part time job right now, but I don't know if I should be working in radio anymore. On-air, my voice is too soft and boyish, just not deep enough. I don't know if they're really looking for anyone right now, and I don't know who to talk to, although I did email Dave Walker about it. The thing is, I'm back in graduate school now, and radio is becomming more of a hobby than a career.

But you're right, it's a golden opportunity. I'm just afraid, if I start getting paid for it, it will turn out like every other broadcasting job I've had around here...

Good point Ron, well taken, ;-)

That doesn't mean that you can't do your hobby. You know you love the business. It will at least help with the addiction. As far as your voice is concerned, I wouldn't worry about it. Give it a shot.

Maybe you too could be like Ron and work 5 minutes for every radio station on the South Plains?

Yes it would be interesting to seem them get Bill O'Reilly, or TSN.....oooo maybe they can go after Rush, and Hannity too....I think your just jumping on the bandwagon a little too soon. I wish them luck but they are just babies in a grown up world right now.

Based on the how hard it is to do production for just one radio station, and Ron's in charge of 6, I bet it's more like 24-7...

Take it easy Patrick, I'm not suggesting that TSN or O'Reilly were be any better off somewhere else. I'm just impressed with how far they've gone without having RAMAR or CCU behind them. You have to admit, it's impressive.

BTW: Dave Walker is one of the founders of 950 as a talk station, so we've got him partially to thank for FoxTalk 950...

Wait...
Which Ron are we talking about here?
Are we talking about BVG or the "Head for the Hills" Ron?

Im fine, Garrett, I know that TSN and O'Reilly are fine right where they are. But I have not listened enough to them to be impressed. But considering they are basically starting from new, yeah, thats impressive.

How do you know my name by the way?

The "Trick" part of your username gave it away, and since I know you are running the show somewhat down there at 950, I just put the pieces together...

You guys still using Magic's old green slider board in the control room?

HAHA!! We got rid of that thing forever ago.....we have had a digital board for over a year now. Really nothing is the same from back when you were here.

Nothing?
You no longer use Digital Universe?
Kay Boren doesn't read the news anymore?
Brian no longer does the weather?
You guys no longer run Rangers and Cowboys games?
You are no longer in the same studio?
You no longer have a big marking board in the control room behind you?
Is Ray Moran no longer the owner?
Is Brad no longer the VP?

In life, there are few absolutes.

OK smart ass.....when I say nothing I mean as in ALOT of things have changed, we no longer use the DU, Kay only just started reading the news again cause reporters are hard to come by, Bryan does the weather when it is convenient to him (haha), we will probably have the Rangers and the Cowboys as long as they will let us, same studio but it has changed tremendously, the big board is still there, I have seen Ray maybe once and I was under the impression that it has been passed along to Brad all together, dont know though. But even in the two and a half years that I have been here their have been huge changes.

Ok, sorry.

I enjoyed working there, actually. But back then, Chuck Hinze was in charge.
What used to frustrate me was, how little a dent we made in the ratings no matter how much we did. (Do they still have the free fountain drinks in the cafateria?)

It was easier to get the weather back then, than it is now. We used to have accuweather call us, and I'd back it up onto tape, and later the 350 short/cut. That way, when we didn't have Captain Tornado, we still had local weather. I guess they've long cut that. There was even talk that eventually, the meteorologist would be able to call in at an exact time and update the weather without anyone having to do push a button. Again, never happened I guess.

Hey, are there any plans to start carrying the Fox Radio report? I hear it runs around 1pm, could probably byte off some of the extra Dr. Laura load.

In fact, let talk by email. I'm garyboroda at yahoo dot com

I bet it's not!

Every time I listen to local radio down here I hear one of your freakin' Grahams spots! That's not very often though - I got XM and I'm addicted to the comedy channel.

Oh well... Chalk this up as my semi-monthly visit to Radio-Info. Back to being an enigma...
