Newsradio 1420 going Real Country?

Take out format that nobody listens to because its on autopilot;
Insert canned format that even less people care about. At this point, you could simulcast Real Country, or just rebroadcast static, and nobody would know the difference.

Which proves my point: Either do something right and be committed to it, or don't do it at all. In a market with two already heavily invested News Talkers, you can't just throw talk on a format without doing any work. The station won't run itself. And, you certainly can't call it "NewsRadio." It occured to me that Dave was really too busy to be running a News Talk station.

The big loss for Lubbock?
No CBS News radio affiliate, and the loss of Dennis Miller.

This has always been my pet peeve about cable "news" channels that are mostly talk shows. I guess truth in labeling doesn't apply to them.

too bad if that is true, you would not only be losing Miller but Imus... if i were 950 i would be calling some syndicators QUICK!

Yeah, I think we found the replacement for Miller.
But the thing is, I hear that 950 makes money from selling air time, instead of the old ratings model. So I wouldn't expect any changes. Which is a shame. Miller and Imus would fit 950 like a black leather glove.

i'm not sure WHAT dumping Talk on 1420 gets him... unless he doesn't want to miss out on the "Proposed Artist Performance Fees"... somebody explain why this was a Great move... the way i look at it music on AM radio has NO Future, at least Talk HAS a chance..

Maybe he's taking over 105.7 and moving NewsRadio1420 there?
Lets face it, the audio on 1420 isn't the greatest.
Although, I'm not sure the audio on 105.7 is much better...

It's simple- Imus is tough to sell, and ever since James Clark jumped ship to KCBD-TV, the "news" part of newstalk has been noticeably absent. 1420 has been on autopilot far too long.

Supposedly, the Real Country format would appeal to an older demo, one that probably wouldn't care about fidelity all that much, especially considering the KRBL signal has been crap since day one.

Plus, with the AM he'd have a shot at not only Lubbock, but some regional towns too. Not sure if nostalgia is enough to base a format on, but there's a few others still in business with that in mind- KDAV and KRFE. Will they knock-out KLLL? Certainly not, but they're still in business.

Dave's also been hammered with the repeat of KCBD's newscast. He's trading that for free ads/mentions on Channel 11, but I told him it's not worth it. In general, TV isn't simply radio minus the pictures and it makes for very bad radio filler. Does 950 still repeat KJTV's newscast too? Seriously, I'd prefer static to poorly done local tv done even worse by repeating it on the radio. Just about anything I think, even Real Country, would do better than simulcasting TV audio.

I'd surmise he would simulcast his morning show since it would have appeal on both stations. In that sense, he'd basically have the old Rebel format resurrected on the AM. And I bet he could sell it better.

I don't necessarily agree that music is an "FM" only thing. With respect to the younger demos, there's an argument to be made that music on the radio "has NO future" compared to newer, smaller and more portable multi-media platforms. But I don't think radio is going away, otherwise I'd be doing something different too.

Will Rebel listeners switch to AM? I think a few might. It will be interesting to see...

I completely disagree with Dave's decision. Maybe I don't understand the difficulties of running a radio station because if I owned 1420, I'd make that station the most listened to station in town. I would jump at an opportunity to own a frequency like that.

Cheap? Ha, he'd have to give it away for free in order for me to take it over. Last time I checked, people don't give away radio stations.

It's official.

Dave dropped the "newstalk" last week and is currently running a Classic Country format on 1420.

I tuned in and listened for a bit.

He's branding it "Rebel Radio 1420" and has dropped Imus and Miller.

Kept CBS Radio News.

I understand the Real Country format is still under contract to KRBL until August, and he might pick that up then.

I think he said Larry Byers is on in the afternoons if I heard him correctly.

He's keeping the simulcast of KCBD news which I think is a mistake. He trading that for spots on 11, but I question that strategy.

And here's some food for thought:
At a time when FM stations are switching to Sports, Lubbock has 3 (count 'em) AM stations with english music formats; 1590, 1420, and 580 (part of the day). I know, 580 simulcasts on 87.7, but I can't count that, since the 87.7 simulcast is just a rebroadcast of an AM reciever (one with rather poor reception, I would add).

3 AM music stations in a media market in 2010? What's the definition of backwards?

What would be fun... with a station like that... that nobody is listening to... is to just broadcast the most random crap and see what happens. Like every 10 mins run a recorded segment that is for the legalization of killing baby seals or every 30 mins... run the audio of a clown being mauled by dogs or something! I mean, it's not like anyone is listening! So, have some fun with it. Go find some homeless people and give them some airtime... just delay the hell out of their shows and just let them run wild.

They have some automation and playback issues I've heard at various times this week.

Dave told me that the Real Country satellite-syndicated format that had been on KRBL-FM will begin airing on 1420 starting Monday, 8 March.

The B. Bros. still had the contract until August, but they were doing nothing with it, airing Spanish religious (?) instead. I was told that they were also in violation of the contract by NOT airing the network spots as agreed to, so I guess the network was happy to move it to KJDL.

Real Country was an ABC Radio format- is there still an ABC Radio network or is it all Citadel media now?
