Newsradio Affiliations

So SoFla's news/talk market is coming back in the English side with some entries from Salem and James Crystal that offer services to the market on signals that have been or will be increased. During the day, newsradio is the most common source of news for working folks.

So how is the state of newsradio in South Florida?

Miami-Fort Lauderdale
610 WIOD - FOX & Paul Harvey (I think WIOD maintains ABC & CNN still)
940 WINZ - Air America News & ABC Perspectives (I also think WINZ maintains ABC & CNN through WIOD)
1360 WKAT - Where do they get their news from?

West Palm Beach
850 WFTL - ABC with Paul Harvery (I think they still retain CNN as well)
1290 WJNO - FOX (Did they lose ABC for good to WFTL?)

Fort Myers-Naples-Punta Gorda
1240 WINK & 1270 WNOG - FOX (I also think they still hold the long-time CBS affiliation)
1580 WCCF - FOX (I think they may have the ABC affiliation hidden away too)
106.3 WJPT - ABC with Paul Harvey (music)
98.9 WGUF - No clue who they use...pretty poor signal

We have some pretty big gaps....nobody carries CBS, NBC, or CNN pretty much anymore. Is Westwood One just not station-friendly?

The bad news is:

1. All station marked with a :'( are Clear Channel.
2. In the Miami and WPB Markets, it's almost entirely syndicated talk.

Does Westwood One still do news under the NBC name? I thought they stopped that a few years ago.

I believe that NBC sold all of its radio operations to Westwood One about 20 years ago. They pretty much got out of the radio business all-together back in the late-1980s. Westwood One used the NBC brand name for a few years after that, but then I think that it all just morphed into the overall Westwood One brand name. NBC on the radio has been extinct for quite some time now (unlike CBS Radio which has obviously reemerged with its own original branding). CBS Radio manages the operations of Westwood One.

WINZ runs CNN at top of hour...also bottoms nights and weekends. That Air America network news was awful.

That figures.... We used to call CNN the Clinton News Network.

WFTL's Joyce Kaufman now calls it the Palestinian
News Network because of their extravagant biases!

id be itnerested in knowing how many run NBC NewsRadio, a 1 minute (or is it 5 now) at the TOH? When i was PD in Mississippi, we were pitched OldiesRadio and NBC News.

All it is is repackaged AP stuff

Good to see WINZ with CNN....WIOD used to run ABC at the top and CNN at the bottom of the hour.

I know NPR is alive and well...didn't forget....but NPR is non-commercial and has better affiliate listings on their website.

So updated for Miami...
610 WIOD - FOX & Paul Harvey
940 WINZ - CNN & ABC Perspectives
1360 WKAT - SRN

...Palm Beach...
850 WFTL - ABC with Paul Harvey
1230 WBZT - CNN/CBS???
1290 WJNO - FOX

'NBC News Radio' airs on more than 300 stations including 18 of the TOP 20 markets and 9 of the TOP 10. It was launched in March 2003 as a syndication agreement with Westwood One. The agreement was renewed a few months ago.

This comes as news to me because I thought that NBC was extinct on the radio, but upon further research I have come to realize that I was wrong, and NBC's news division is doing just fine on the radio nationwide.

I can't seem to find a complete list of affiliates anywhere on the web. I checked the official web sites of both NBC and MSNBC. Even on Westwood One's own web page for NBC News Radio they only list a handful of major market stations in Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Los Angeles.

The newscasts are one-minute in length.

WJNA runs CBS news at the top of every hour.

WFTL runs ABC at the top of every hour.

WIOD runs Fox at the top and bottom of the hour during morning drive only.

No sure how WIOD keeps Paul Harvey. I thought you had to be an ABC affiliate to have him. They are not anymore. I think they used to run under the umbrella that WINZ ran ABC, so they got Harvey, but WINZ is no longer running ABC.

Paul Harvey is syndicated by the ABC Radio Network to over 1,600 radio stations worldwide. Some of them are ABC radio stations, but most of them are not.
