NEWSRADIO IN HOUSTON

Apples and oranges, unfortunately. You can't compare a station like WBBM with KUHF from a staffing or resources standpoint. Houston really needs a commercial owner like CBS to step up and do news right.

Cheap Channel? News? Oh dear Lord! You must be kidding! This cluster is a cluster "F" done on the C-H-E-A-P! The news department at KTRH is a skeleton of what it once was. It will take a serious owner who knows how to do news (CBS) to make a serious effort with any promise of success!

Cheap Channel...I don't know whether to throw up or laugh! :D :'( ??? ::)

They(CC Houston) have deep enough pockets to try if they ever decide to pull it off. Yes, hell
will freeze over before that ever happens, of course.

Why won't CBS give Houston it a try? ???

My theory: They don't own a TV in Houston. This kind of thing works best when you can spread the cost among multiple platforms.

Is there a market where they're doing all news where they don't own a TV? I can't think of one.

My theory on CBS Houston is that they are making enough $$$$$$$ on their FM's without changing anything. Also, as anemic as Cheap Channel is (and anemic is mild when it comes to the news on KTRH), they would be competition. There is no question in my mind that an all news station, done the right way, would work very well here. CBS does not have a decent AM signal in the market so that's another reason for them to not be interested.

Just my thoughts...

Doesn't always have to be on AM i think KLOL would be a great signal for a news format.

I would take the most under-performing CBS station in the Houston cluster,,and change it. BTW...is there anything they can do the upgrade KIKK-AM? Even a frequency change. I do agree about KLOL,
but if they are making enough money with it, that probably will not change it.

610 is more than a decent AM, but they're not going to blow up that very successful sports format for this.

610KILT does indeed have a good signal. You can hear it all the way to Corpus, very much along the same path as KTRH. When I was on KILT in the 1980s, I got quite a few calls from the coastal bend. When I was on the air on KIKN in 1974 in Corpus, I listened to Barry Kaye on KILT every afternoon.

KXYZ also has a good signal for a station on the upper end of the AM band. 5KW non directional in the day and 5KW directional at night. It's not a bad signal.

Having stated that, none of the AMs cover the entire market. The population outgrew the original patterns of coverage, especially 1070 KNTH.

Let me simplify it a bit. There is no AM that covers the market. A good signal on 610 is probably not good enough for this to work. Without a KRLD-esque signal, they are probably not willing to try this. Of course, this is all conjecture anyway.
