Newsreader pet peeve

News readers should know the proper pronunciation of the names of people and places. You can normally get a pronunciation guide off of the wire service if you need it. I sometimes wonder if news readers have ever heard of some of the people they are talking about. The names of high profile people and politicians (notice I didn't lump them in with "people") shouldn't be hard to correctly pronounce.

Yeah, it's petty, but I hear it on stations large and small in many markets. Put forth a little effort to do it right.

I think a large part of the problem is that the people reading the news heve no interest in the topic, or person being reported on, and probably never listen to Radio or TV news, or read newspapers. Sign of the times.

Although it can be amusing at times. I used to get the biggest kick out of Les Nessman on the tV show WKRP when he mispronounced names like Chi-chi Rodriguez!

But seriously, yes it can be bad...I have heard things like Osoma Bin-LAIDEN!, etc. It just looks bad.
