Newsroom Upgrade

We might be doing an upgrade to our newsroom in conjunction with another project and am considering using the Dixon Newsroom mixer. Anyone using it now or have any experience with it? Also plan to hook up a Broadcast Tools 16.4 to it and mono it out so I can use the left for 1 input the Dixon mixer and the right to the other. That way I can get 32 audio inputs out of it. We currently use around 28 inputs to a Logitek Mon10, that I hate, and we have 4 in use and a hot spare on the shelf. And no, scaling the amount of audio inputs is not an option. Thanks for any ideas or stories you might post.

6 ABC channels, 2 Comrex units, 2 Zephyers, 2 FM air feeds, 1 AM program feed, TV audio, Computer, Phone, Marti, Sat. music feed, Browns, Indians, Cavs, Ohio State network, 2 Mutual channels, 1/8" input jack, AM.FM Tuner and a few others that I cant recall off the top of my head. Every one is labeled (numbered).

Now that I have answered your question, answer mine....LOL

I should send you a copy of the quote for servers and workstations we are looking at for a related project.

4 Starguides and 2 ABR200's...Each of the 4 audio cards on the ABC Starguide goes to a switch pot that separates (L) (R) and Mono feeds because they sometimes run different programming on the left and right channels.
I could run most of this stuff thru a patch panel except I hate them...matter of fact, I just pulled some out of the rack in the TOC. Wish like hell I could sell them off but we have to hold onto everything...anybody want some very used mono-chrome monitors?

Short of putting everything on a router in the TOC, a 16.4 is a good modern replacement for an old mechanical monitor switcher.<P ID="signature">______________

We got a hold of some Aviom AN16 personal monitor mixers. Primarily used in recording studios.

One option is an input module with 16 balanced inputs. You can take the 16 channels and pair them for stereo. Stack 'em for up to 64 channels.

Connects with a CAT-5 cable. They use their own "A-Net" protocol, hubs, & wiring so it doesn't connect to your present network.

The personal mixers let you mix any of the 16+ channels at any level, panned anywhere from left to right. Put your mix in memory for instant recall.

I listened to that system for over an hour last year at the NAB in Vegas. What a great system. I never thought about it for this particular application but you sure have me thinking now. Thanks for such a great idea!!!!!!!!
This is exactly why I posted that question. Damn, I gotta go look at their site again and lay some pencil to paper to see if it could work for us.....

I have installed 3 Dixon Newsroom mixers in the last year. Two of them in our Houston stations. They are a good unit with limited flexibility. The computer in's and outs are unbalanced...to interface easily to most computer sound cards. In our cases, we were using balanced computer cards (ASI 5111's) and that required a matchbox to make the trip. I found by exploring the inside of the box that the mic inputs can be jumpered to line level so you can use the high level output of a mic processor. In our casees we used a xy router controller for the line input pot...thusly allowing all inputs that would be wanted to be available. It has plenty of interface options, relay closures, and monitor options that make it useful as both a production and on air console. Talent has no problem getting a grip on it because it is straight foreward and similar to every other board they have used in the past...If you want any other info, email me direct.

The Aviom currently supplies 5 workstations with air monitors. Will expand to all studios so anybody can monitor anything. These are not "off air" feeds but they are processed. Needed for the 3 stations that we have on delay and for those that can't stand the little bit of delay in the air monitor that the digital processing introduces. Have warning lights & alarms to tell them if something's off the air or have silence.

Still looking for the "ultimate" single unit workstation for a talk host or someone not in the control seat.
A mini-mixer that they can set up a monitor mix like the Aviom. An intercom/IFB to a half-dozen + other "workstations". And be able to do their own mix of their mic, a couple computer DAW workstations, and portable recorder into the main mix. I can do this with 2 off the shelf devices, but it's clunky and takes up a lot of desktop space.
