Newsy preps for OTA launch

Actually... not on cable. At least, not yet. Newsy will start off with OTA and streaming for now, not cable or MVPDs like YouTube TV. They may get to it eventually but not at launch.

Newsy wanted to start the distribution process all over again and thus, is what's happening.
Why would you want to start the distribution process again?

Why would you want to start the distribution process again?

Because they didn't want cable distribution rules to affect over-the-air. More likely the reverse is what will happen. Either that or Newsy really wants to remain over-the-air only.

What cable distribution rules would affect OTA? What do you mean the reverse will happen?

For one thing, there are E/I rules that may have to be followed and unlike cable, there's no threshold for like safe time profanity or whatnot on digital OTA.

What I'm saying is that how you distribute a network, the OTA and streaming way vs. cable/satellite and MVPDs way can make a big difference.

Moreso, Cable Distribution deals often come with restrictions around your ability to distribute other ways. Even though Newsy was ALWAYS streaming, it was NEVER the same channel they distributed to cable because cable wouldn't allow that. By starting over, they can distribute the SAME channel however they choose, rather than being restricted as a cable channel.

It's the same reason you don't see traditional cable channels on Pluto, etc. because Cable Companies won't allow it. This also benefits the network, because they get paid for exclusivity on pay TV.

So Newsy on cable was different to Newsy on Pluto etc? How was it different? How is Ion also on cable and OTA and it is the same channel?

I accidentally tuned into Newsy this afternoon and left it on for a few minutes to see what it was all about. The anchor had some sort of ethnic accent but was completely understandable. When they switched to a reporter his accent sounded the personification of Desi Arnaz. I almost swallowed my tuna sandwich whole! At first I thought it was a put-on but not so.

THIS. Not to mention, with Newsy on cable, if you wanted to watch Newsy's cable feed as it was broadcast, you would have to pay $2.99/month on Newsy's streaming apps for it whereas now as an over-the-air channel, the channel is now available for FREE on the same platforms. And I'm not talking about Pluto TV or XUMO or any of those places, I'm talking about Newsy's streaming app on Roku and other places.

Yes, they did charge $2.99/month if you wanted to watch Newsy or have cable or satellite authentication to watch it for free. Otherwise, you would have to find the Top Stories by Newsy feed which has been shut down in favor of just Newsy itself.

Through cable, they offered an anchored live channel similar to what we have today. Online (on services such as on Pluto), they offered a "Top Stories by Newsy" feed, similar to the old Headline news, of pre-recorded packages. I was curious about this myself, especially when I gained access to Youtube TV and was able to checkout the main Newsy channel that was offered before and compare the two.
