Newtown Affects Ke$ha

Airplay of her single "Die Young" had dropped over the weekend.

"She also declared, more cryptically: "I had my very own issue with 'die young' for this reason. I did NOT want to sing those lyrics and I was FORCED TO."

REALLY? She NEVER had an issue with the song before the tragedy - it was one of her biggest hits, if not her biggest of all.

I think it was her third biggest hit in the US, at least, behind "TiK ToK" and "We R Who We R"...I really liked it.

She said in an interview a while back that she liked the song and what it was about.

In one of the linked articles they reference "Pumped Up Kicks" -- It didn't take a tragedy to make Pumped Up Kicks an inappropriate song. The song was inappropriate out of the gate.

I think pulling the Ke$ha record is overreacting, however.

Notice how Clear Channel and CBS wouldn't comment on the situation - I'm convinced they're pulling Die Young to avoid being targeted by the federal government as potentially having influenced the perpetrator - if they were just pulling it "out of respect" for the victims' families, they would've come out and said that

Clear Channel runs the CHR in Hartford, and CBS runs the Hot AC, both of which played the song

IMO Cumulus had an easier time responding to the press because they don't own any stations in Connecticut, and therefore are completely clear of any possibility of blame

What on earth does that song inspire in ANYONE but buy a bottle of booze to cope with it?

I have to disagree with that reasoning of them pulling it...BTW, Clear Channel (at least) didn't "pull it" everywhere, WHQC in Charlotte is still playing it rather healthily...

I don't really listen to WFBC much here in Greenville since I can get WHQC well (and it's so much better), but I notice when I do scan by there that they're still playing "Die Young" pretty often - according to Mediabase, they played it 69x in the past 7 days, actually an increase in spins. I have to commend them for not overreacting like so many of these other stations.

Any stations also pull The Band Perry's "If I Die Young" after last weekend?

Ke$ha's next single, "C'Mon", has had massive double digit adds and is gaining plays rapidly on CHR given its position on the chart right now - I'm wondering if stations added it sooner because of "Die Young"...

So, today, the NRA came out with a statement blasting "the media" for glorifying violence (in respect to the Connecticut shooting) - and the Obama administration came out with a statement regarding violence in video games

I can GUARANTEE you that if radio hadn't pulled "Die Young", they would be targeted as well - the actual meaning of the song is irrelevant, since we're talking about people with psychological/deveopmental disorders who can easily misinterpret lyrics

And, yes, "C'Mon" is being added prematurely due to stations pulling "Die Young" - the new single isn't even available on ITunes yet

^Sorry, it's available, it just isn't in the ITunes Top 200 yet - still think that's a sign that it's definitely being added prematurely, though

How many stations have actually PULLED (totally) "Die Young" as opposed to backing off of it if they took any action? Are any Cumulus stations playing it....could they be contributing to a lot of the decline on the charts? Clear Channel actually still has it in power on a number of stations (WRNW/Milwaukee, WWPW/Atlanta, WMKS/Greensboro, WIOQ/Philadelphia, WKFS/Cincinnati, WKSC/Chicago, etc show at, the least), so there must not be any top-down orders from them regarding it. CBS has it in power at least on WODS/Boston.

B-93.7 in Greenville did not change the rotation after the change (they might have now, I haven't checked) and Channel 96.1 in Charlotte just backed off of it a little while still keeping it in power rotation. Kiss 95.1 stopped playing it entirely.

It seems if these companies were worried about legal action or the government coming after them, they would have removed it from all of their stations and not have it in power on any of them. I could understand a station in the NY/NJ/CT area pulling it, though.

For Christ's sake, quit whining about a song being temporarily pulled off the air out of respect. Even the artist (if you want to call her that) agreed.

BTW not sure if anyone's brought this up yet. but the Connecticut shooting is definitely impacting "Battle Scars" by Lupe Fiasco (i. e. very few stations want to add it) - he mentions a school shooting, taking out a rifle, etc.

"Battle Scars" has been around a while though. I don't think it was ever destined to be a hit regardless of current events.

There's a new song that got its AAA/Alternative adds date pushed back into February, because the chorus repeats the phrase "that gun is loaded" over and over again
