New media player lets Eonstreams' clients tailor ads to listeners

For several years it's been pretty easy for radio stations to broadcast via the Internet.

The big question has been how to make it pay, said Emma Woods, vice president of operations for Eonstreams, a Knoxville-based media streaming company. ...

But for the past year Eonstreams has been developing a product that combines audio content and advertising, allowing stations to target ads to their users and closely track their listening audience. ...

At the heart of Eonstreams' product is a media player that builds ads -- either billboard, audio or video messages -- around the streaming content.

With the player, stations can plug in ads for online listeners while ads for the broadcast audience are playing. Ads also can be displayed or played before the streaming program begins.

In addition, depending on the online registration requirements for a station, ads can be targeted to particular listeners such as males, females, 18-25-year-olds and locations.

The program also tracks listener data from individual stations to all stations Eonstreams serves, providing information about how many listeners are tuned in and when -- crucial data for selling online ads to advertising customers, Woods said. ....

Eonstreams provides streaming services through their own web-based "media player" for Clear Channel stations and other broadcasters.

Haven't Eonstreams/CC been doing this for quite a while?

I listen to Rush and C2C on KEX. The KEX stream has had ads (mostly for either the hosting company that built their Website or Kevin Trudeau) for months now.

Apparently not targeted ads

They've been doing streaming using their custom webplayer for a while. They have inserted Internet-only ads into the stations' streams. As I understand the article, they will now be able to insert different ads for different people. You will have to register (and provide demographic info about yourself) to listen. Advertisers will be able to target listeners by location, age, sex (maybe other factors). Two people listening to Rush (or Franken): a 26 year old guy may hear an ad for Lite Beer, while his mother hears an ad for skin cream.

What a great idea for NTR...

I occasionally listen to the WIBT(FM)-Charlotte stream, and I normally see an ad there for a local Toyota dealership. With registered users and demographic information, they could take that a step further and advertise trucks to men and minivans to mothers. This seems to me to be a great way to help radio diversify it's revenue streams.

the only ads i ever hear online are stupid PSA ads

"don't touch a stove eye when it's on, it's hot, brought to you by the hot things are hot association and the ad council" (yes i just made that one up, but some of them are about that obvious and stupid)<P ID="signature">______________

Re: Apparently not targeted ads

Some stations have realized the Internet audio stream can be a revenue stream and they are selling Internet spots. Some aren't and continue to run PSA's - or even worse a constantly repeating sound-bed or even dead air.

What's really stupid are the PSA's that are really disguised ads. For example, Graham Kerr's "Eat you five a day (servings of fruit and vegatables)" PSA, from the "National Cancer Foundation." A careful look at their website shows this is a front for United Brands (Chiquita Banana) and other food companies - and "a bunch" of Graham's suggestions involve Bananas.
