Next Flip is...

WCFO-AM.

I know, I never heard of it either. It's at 1160 and owned by Jeff Davis, not the voice of WSB or the former President of the Confederacy.

My source tells me that syndicated, reformed shock jock Mancow (nee Erich Matthew Muller) will be handling mornings from his studios at Citadel in Chicago. Mancow has had many run ins with the FCC mostly for obscenity. All complaints were brought by a crusading. local do-gooder. Mancow claims to be a Libertarian and a conservative (just like Boortz.)

In addition, <sarcasm>Dr. Laura will be making her long-awaited return to Atlanta. Her straight talk on the declining morals and values is needed now more than ever. The fact that she is returning to the ATL has made me cancel my membership in the Emperor's Club </sarcasm>.

Rounding out the line-up will be Lou Dobbs. Hey Lou, you may wanna tone down the immigrant talk, Atlanta is loaded with them. In fact, I'm not even typing this, I got a guy on Buford Hwy to do it for me.

Paragraph of the Week! :D

Re: Next Flip is 1160 AM

Unless Mr. Davis purchased the station from Joe Weber, the station is owned by Joe Weber (alongside WMLB of bird call fame). From what I understand Mr. Weber is very liberal, so I don't think he would program conservate (or anti-immigrant) talk.

After WMLB moved to 1690, 1160 became WCFO all-business talk. From what I am seeing on the website, they mostly air satellite-fed and brokered business talk.

I don't know why anyone wants to go up against the 800-lbs. 50,000 watt flamethrowing WSB-AM. You can try until you are blue in the face, but it you will not compete. Look at the ratings for WGST, WGKA, and WFOM/WALR-AM (not listed). They don't even add up to a quarter of the WSB-AM audience. WSB-AM could broadcast sound effects 24/7 (like WREK does), and they still would be in the top two.

WSB just announced that they will be flipping to all sound effects by the end of next week.

WMLB 1160 was quite good as a nostalgia station when Corey owned it. One downside was when Corey upped it to 50kW day, Corey bought the original WMLB 1170 in Cumming (a really good Americana station) and took it dark to do that.

Jeff Davis=Davis Broadcasting (La Raza)?

Last I heard 1160 was still owned by Weber, too.

If they did flip I imagine it would be a very short playlist of SFX.

Nah, leave WSB-AM alone....flip B instead..."for the best variety of sound effects while you work..."

If its the same Jeff Davis who was schlepping spots for WGST and GNN back in the 90s, I doubt he's the owner. Could likely be the station manager.

This explains why John Adams made a switch to WGKA 920 last weekend, trading a 2 hour show for a 1 hour show....

Any word on if any other station will pick up Ray Luccia or Dr. Gene?

At 160 watts night (http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WCFO&service=AM&status=L&hours=N) I wonder why they're even bothering with any programming besides repeats or brokered unknowns after dark....

ATL is the second-biggest market in the country with only one clear-channel AM....behind Houston with none.

Hey. WGST had the chance to get one at 920 AM too. Beats me why it never happened.

I didn't realize Bruce Williams was even on AM anymore. Everyone who calls his show these days listens on XM Radio.

You forgot the "voted #1 again for the best variety of sound effects while you work..." And, yes, I would suspect this would be in the first book of its flip ;D

Wow. For a liberal radio programmer, he sure has a milquetoast lineup. Where's Stephanie Miller and Thom Hartmann?

Sound effects would do better on this signal.

Houston has KTRH 740. It's directional but a clear channel station with 50,000 watts and a huge signal.

Tom Taylor correctly said the following in his column this morning:

You don’t need big ratings – or any ratings, really – to be successful at the biz-talk format.

Business seemed the most viable possibility for 1160, a daytimer (for all intents and purposes) with a poor signal (despite being 50,000 watts). The business format is a concept sell. Anybody who listens probably is in the same very attractive demo for certain upscale products.

There's too much talk competition in Atlanta for the new format to register in Arbitron. Yes, the talk programming on 1160 will be a little different. Even so, I don't see this working for them.

It will take a sharper sales staff than 1160 has to sell it. Joe Webber is going to have to realize the modulation & compression settings have got to be hotter and louder than they've been.
Dr Laura had huge numbers on WSB years ago and did well at WGST before they yanked her for a sports talk show. There could be an audience for her because AM radio has nothing for women now.
I'm glad to see some of these shows get on in Atlanta but I'm surprised that Dennis Miller isn't on. He does better in other markets than a lot of shows currently on in Atlanta.

If a bird calls in the woods, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? I wonder who sold Webber on this one?

Dennis Miller is already on Atlanta radio on 1230/1340 everyday. Also, Joe Weber is not a liberal. I don't know who had that idea.

It is good for Atlanta radio to have this many options for syndicated programming.

But I have an idea for Atlanta talk radio. How about local talk radio?

Imagine radio shows that had local issues and local perspectives on national issue.

That would be a refreshing concept but maybe too expensive to produce.
