Next Format Change: What will be the next format change in Boston (besides 850)

The Format Changes if any, should be two.
1A. Change 97.7, either change it to (put "Funkytown"-which makes it "Funkytown 97.7")
1.B if you all don't like that, another one for 97.7 should be changed to (HOT New Country) call it "Eagle 97.7"
Put Anything other than Rock and Roll on there, if they have to, put WRKO on 97.7 as well, anything except Rock and Roll.

Another change should be, Clear Channel should've put (MIA) on 101.7 as well as on 1430am. It's a waste of time, if you ask me to have an (We Play Anything) format on, because 95% of the music they play is old Rock and Roll/Classic Rock, and old Soft Rock, and 1% Disco music. It's a waste of time if you ask me.

You all might not like what I have to say, but that's my ideas

A waste of time? Whether or not you like the concept of Jack-type stations, they do an amazing job in the money demo, especially the ones owned by CC. Don't believe me? Check out the ratings for their stations in Charlotte,Cleveland, and Baltimore. I'm positive this will outbill what Mia or FNX could bill on 101.7.

I'm sorry but I have to tell you once again radio is a business. WAAF makes money for Entercom.
They put it on 97.7 to bring it closer to Boston. If you want Funkytown, get an HD radio and tune
to 93.7. I can get it great here in Beverly as the stick is in nearby Peabody.

>>Put Anything other than Rock and Roll on there,

Again I remind you from WKRP's first episode
Les: But there are already lots of rock and roll stations in Cincinnatti!
Andy: Well, why do you think that is, Les?
Les: Well, I think it's a plot of some sort.
Andy: (Laughs) No, Les, Rock and roll is where the money is.

>>Another change should be, Clear Channel should've put (MIA) on 101.7 a

(Bangs head against the wall. Ow. That hurts.)
Please. I know Harbor is boring, and predictable, but it makes Clear Channel money.
They spent money. They want to make money. Mia might have made a little.
Harbor will make a lot.

>>95% of the music they play is old Rock and Roll/Classic Rock,

There's a reason why it's called Popular Music. (And the same applies to Amp. They are
playing POPULAR music.)

You know what, people love eating beef and chicken and pork but it's not good for you so
let's ban the meat restaurants and only offer vegetarian. (/sarcasm)

It...is...popular. Please! You want that stuff, go and buy your own station.
(As for country we do fine with WKLB and I can't see any competition going on...we did
have it at one point with 96.9 and 105.7 but it's best consolidated onto one station, 102.5.)

Heck I would have loved to have 101.7 do conservative talk (even though the signal
wouldn't reach me at work.) But they did studies. They found people wanted variety hits.
Advertisers want a certain demo, and this appeals to them.

"Young man this radio station is a business. It is not here for your personal listening pleasure."
"Ma'am I know it's a business. That's why I had to change the format." (WKRP)

PS as for RKO yeah it would be nice on FM but the AM 680 signal isn't too bad by day, and by night fewer people are listening anyway as they go north-south and if you really want Savage etc
and can't pick up RKO well, you have other stations running it anyway.

>>Whether or not you like the concept of Jack-type stations, they do an amazing job in the money demo,

Indeed love it or hate it, it makes money. That's what they want (to quote old song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uqCocIh3_o (Barrett Strong)

Ent. hated to kill off Mike. It was making them money! But they needed an FM home for EEI.
They could have moved Mike to 97.7 but they needed that to // WAAF.

So CC picks up a sure money maker. Boring! Predictable! MAKES MONEY

@Raccoonradio, hahah you had me laughing with your WKRP responces
Don't get me wrong, I do listen to 101.7 a few times, but not for long, only to see what they are playing and what they will play next, as well as when it was (Mike 93.7) same reason. I listened to them for a few minutes only to see what they were about to play next.

Next format change?/

Might be WPLM-99.1, believe it or not.

I think there's a good chance WGBH will buy it to convert it to a simulcast of their "Classical New England" service.

It would also restore a strong signal for WCRB in points south of Boston.

As some may have guessed ESPN 24/7 goes on 850 right after the end of the Sox' season. Maybe Bobby V can get a job with ESPN if he gets cut by the Sox.

And yup I was kidding about banging my head against the wall. Just trying to say that you do need to remember radio is a biz and even if you think they're crazy to ignore certain formats you'd like to hear, they have their reasons and they will live and die, money-wise, by those decisions.

If anything Mike, at least at first, threw in some surprising stuff, then got more "safe". Harbor is playing it safe--but they're going for music that a lot of people want to hear, and that's the truth.
But again today's news is all about 850 going all ESPN, and while it didn't happen on Labor Day,
the end of the reg. season (we now know the Sox are officially mathematically eliminated, a couple days back) would seem a good time to pull the switch. And they have.

WPLM--if GBH has the money who knows. If they want to sell to GBH...

wcozBoston said:
Who had overall better ratings, WAAF or Mike FM?

Why didn't CC or Entercom purchase 99.5 from Nassau instead of WGBH?
IIRC, MIke had better 6+ ratings, but the reason they were blown up is because WAAF billed better, which is more important than the beauty pageant 6+ books.
