Next Format Flip I'd Like To See!

How about 88 WRFD flip back to "chicken rock!" ;D Yeah I know it won't happen but it would be cool. I'd like to hear those heritage jingles again!

Riding on a school bus in the mid-70's when we had split sessions, I used to bring my portable AM radio. I particularly remember one jingle I would LOVE to hear again. It goes something like this ........

(instrumental bed leading up to) ..... "We really carrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre ..... Music 88 ..... wheeeeeeeeeeeeee (rey) ..... W-R-F-Deeee-eeeeeeeeee ..... da-da-da!"

Oh, you don't go back far enough. The Music 88 jingles were of the Bob James era. Prior to that (Michael O'Malley was pd at the time and he may have inherited them from Len Anthony) they used the Philadelphia Story Pams jingles.

But at their creative best, when the first flipped from country to oldies in 72 I believe they used their country WRFD jingles and spliced WGAR "all the hits all the time" and other assorted ditties at the end of the WRFD portion to create their own package. To say the least, it was creative.

For a low budget station, they were probably the best sounding station in the market from about 72-76. Too bad it was a daytimer that couldn't get traction.

From the ears of a middle-schooler at the time, I would say I have to agree. Maybe they weren't as "cool" to listen to as WCOL, but I thought they sounded great during the 1975-1976 era when I listened to them. It's too bad WNCI never followed that particular heritage--they never hooked me in like WRFD, WCOL or 92-X did.

Would they have been classified as an adult station? WTVN and WBNS were the boring adult stations, WRFD sounded more like WCOL to my ears.

Their on air approach was a designed to sound more like WGAR which was a high energy delivery type MOR/AC. More personality than top 40 but similar in tightness. Very tight seques, talk up to the vocal, lots of use of jingles.

During the O'Malley/Bob James watch, it was probably at it's peak. The only person I still know of working in radio from those crews is Jeff Detrow (Jeffrey P Morgan on RFD at the time). Does mornings in San Diego.

Next format flip I'd like to see is two or three more stations going the all-sports route. That'd be great.
Everyone be sure and check out the next couple Columbus Alives. There might just be something very interesting in one of them.

Like Columbus needs more Sports Talk stations. ::)

This is why terrestrial radio is dying. There is no diversity in radio. This is why people like you just want to see more top forty, more conservative talk radio, and more sports stations in Columbus.

This is the reason why HD Radio haven't caught on. People are turning to Sirius XM Radio, internet, and podcast. I find it funny that the last ratings book for Columbus showing WBNS FM The Mix was beating WBNS AM The Fan and the Dispatch Group dropped the more successful format. I find it funny that their station ID still includes WBNS-1 HD FM. When I tuned to 97.1 FM I see WBNS HD sans the -1. Dispatch Group should keep the Hot AC format and put it on WBNS HD2 with limited on air hosts.

I was being a bit sarcastic in my remark above, didn't really mean it, and maybe I should've used a goofy smiley to make that clear. Sorry, willcail. Loved your last sentence, though -- yep, you've sure got me figured out! ;)

It's in the new one that just came out yesterday. Page 46.
