Next Format Flip

Will Columbus get a format flip anytime soon?

- A new CHR, Rhythmic, or Urban would be nice.
- Could we see Mix 1079 skew more CHR?

What flip is next?

I'm thinking by January we will have at least 1 format flip or shift. Since you brought up 107.9, they seem to be highly likely to drop the 80s as they go into 2010. Then again, we might have some other station flip to Country or a talk format.

You may be in luck re CHR or Urban, since the Columbus rule is that flips/new stations must go with a format that already exists

Could we see 102.5 go to EMF and KLove come to town to compete against WCVO 104.9 The River?

Quite possible, since that would be more duplication -- especially if we figure in non-coms like WHKC. Besides EMF has money.

I think 1230 will change again, but to what who knows? I also think by the end of 2010 WTVN will be on both 610 AM and 93.3 FM.

What makes you think they/1230 will drop sports? As someone mentioned elsewhere here, even with it's rock bottom ratings on 1230, that format can be sold as a bonus with the other formats in the CC Columbus radio chain of stations. Also, it's a low maintenance format because it's syndicated almost 24/7 on 1230 AM. I'm not looking for a format change at 1230 anytime soon because of what that person posted a few months ago about any potential format changes at 1230. Beside, what else can they try on 1230 that already hasn't been tried before? Polkas?
Yes, they even had a Weekend Polka show on 1230 about fifteen years ago.

It looks like to me that WTVN will be on both 610 AM and 93.3 FM around the time Bob Connors decides to retire from WTVN. Also, I still check out
the 103.9 morning team a lot lately, at Bob Connors loss(if any). I do enjoy listening to Kelly Quinn on 103.9 and if she wasn't on the morning team
I wouldn't bother to listen to their(103.9) morning show at all. My point is this, if 103.9 can pull significance rating points away from B.C.'s show, that would accelerate WTVN move to simulcast on the FM band, I think.

I always thought Kelly Quinn was great on Star 107.9 in mornings with the revolving door of co-hosts she had...Jason Roberts, Andrew Wright, and J. Matthews. Too bad I can't pick up 103.9.
Let's face it, it's not a matter of IF but WHEN 93.3 becomes WTVN-FM. I look for it to happen in early 2010 if not sooner. AM radio is dying a slow death.
The last freakin' thing Columbus needs is another Country signal. It's bad enough that the Dayton market has three, but last I checked Columbus was close to doubling that number.
I look for most Hot ACs to drop the 80s as we move into the next decade, the 2010s...Look for more stations to dig up more 90s titles to replace the tired and stale 80s tunes that have dominated Hot AC signals over the last three decades. I predict most Hot ACs will position themselves as "90s and Beyond" or something to that effect as they phase out the 80s. People looking for their 80s fix will most likely have to find a Classic Hits(B104.3) or Adult Hits(Fly 92.9) outlet, which I see taking over playing the 80s from the Hot AC format. A lot of Hot ACs played some 70s tunes earlier in the decade but have phased out their 70s catalog in favor of 80s and 90s gold.

Well, unless you've had access to the Columbus Arbitrons during the ratings embargo, how do you know they are still rock bottom? Maybe they shot up to a 7.9 12+ share in the last trend.

Would never. I think 103.9 would be the next flip. I bet they could get better ratings with a current hits format. 955 could too.... some stations have just been around too long with the same crap.

I'll have to admit the only reason I listen to 103.9 during the morning Talk is because of Kelly Quinn. I've been listening to her since she was on 92.3 back in the 80s, so it's like listening to a friend from back when I was in high school (even though a graduated years earlier).

Although I think 103.9 would do better as a music format, I doubt they will get rid of their talk format.... at least not yet. However, if any station were to flip formats, I think stunting as a 24x7 Polka station would really catch peoples attention.

As for the 80s format, I wouldn't say it is stale, just that Radio stations are playing the same 80s hits over and over again. When all you play is the same 100 songs from a decade, its going to sound very stale. If an 80s station were to make it today, I think they would have to play a wide variety of songs from the 80s, not just the one that the Mix and the Brew play. Of course 107.9 having been America's 1st 80s Station, they could easily put 80s on their HD channel as they phase it out of the Mix. But as I just said, they would have to have a wide variety of 80s songs.

Polka anyone?

Well, Polka Country might be duplicative enough to qualify...

(Yes, it exists. On a hunch I Googled the term and came up with http://www.polkacountry.com/)

You know it's funny because I actually thought about that after my original post. I wondered if polka country actually did exist and I'll be damned, it sure does.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen.... Columbus' next new format - Polka Country!

107.9 should put 80s on an HD-2 and just go 90s and Now and go up against WNCI.

With their HD coverage area, the potential audience is very small. And that's even before considering how many people actually have an HD radio. Unless the propsed increase to 10% is allowed, rimshots will have very little HD penetration.

Exactly! You have to figure if all of the little "1 share wonders" can't even put a usable analog signal into the core of the market from their adjacent county xmtr sites, they surely will not put an HD signal in...and as noted, almost nobody has a so-called HD radio anyway. As for 107.9 going up against WNCI, are you kidding? The simulcast of 105.7 & 107.1 almost tied WNCI in the early 90s at one point, but 107.9 doesn't even have that much market coverage. Saga probably has more money to spend on promotion and programming than 105/107 back then, but the question is whether Saga would invest any money in it. It looks very unlikely that they would, given their "take the cheapest way out" philosophy of running stations in the Columbus market. Even if they did have the money and were willing to spend it, trying to position 107.9 against WNCI would be a foolish waste with the current signal.

Mix 1079 is a good Hot AC. It leans adult CHR. Signal or not, couldn't they put up a fight? At least get to a 3 share and steal some from WNCI. I don't see why not.
