Next Format Flip?

I decided to post this topic as it is being discussed on other boards.

What radio station could see a format change? What format would you like to have?

I've wondered for quite sometime if either WQSL/WQZL(92.3/101.1) or WRHT(96.3) will change anytime soon?,
the only problem is, what would they go to?

I don't want to speculate; I am just giving my opinion.

Sunny 104.5 is getting clobbered by GNI. I heard Sunrise is having financial troubles so I am questioning how WILT can afford to have all their high profile staff and shows IE Backtraxx USA and Absolutely 80s. I'm sure Tesh's show comes at a price not to mention the CBS telecast in the mornings. One more thing I need to add are Sunny's contests I don't want to mention specifics but they give away some high priced prizes on a regular basis. I am not disgruntled, just confused. Sunny did not appear to be doing that good in the latest book and they are spending all this money. Back to the format issue

Jammin' 99.9 is no longer Wilmington's number one station, it is in third or fourth place now. Double Q is king in both Neilson and Arbitron. Jammin' is number three in the latest Neilson book and in Arbitron Jammin' is around fifth place down from first this time last year; they have lost nearly five points in the Arbitron book so they need to do something and fast

Here is what I would like to see. Sunny is getting Smashed by GNI so why not move the whole station over to 99.9 and give parts of Myrtle Beach a true AC; I say that because if Sunny moved they would vastly improve in office listening.

Move Jammin' over to 104.5 and tweak it to sound more like Movin' 94.5 in Myrtle Beach with more older tracks I'm sorry but I think the 90s tracks get in the way of the Motown and soul. Jammin' should go back to the sound they had about four years ago in my opinion. Last point if Jammin' moved to 104.5 put Tom Joyner on in the mornings as he would fit perfectly with classic R&B/Motown That is what I would like to see Sunrise do

I don't have much to say about Cumulus except for one thing, The Hawk. Would someone please flip that station to something else. They keep repeating 150 songs, with no DJs and if you click on the contest page of their website it still mentions Perry Stone; come on he has been gone for almost two years. I don't know what format would replace the hawk but my point is Double Q and GNI are both Cumulus stations and they do great every book so whoever runs the two knows what they are doing and knows what the listeners want. The Hawk has clearly been abandoned it is getting clobbed by The Bone who also went down a bit in the ratings hell The Hawk is getting Smashed by Easy 105.9 from Myrtle Beach they showed up in the 4.xs while KXS can't crack the 2's for the second book in a row.

Sea-Comm; Seeing as how 98.7 is up for sale I would love to see them buy that big stick and flip it back to Oldies but that will probably never happen.

I would be curious to see the latest ratings for Spring 2010 in the Wilmington Market, while "Sunny 104.5" has
a good presentation, they need a improved signal if they are going to ever compete with 102.7 GNI, and what
i don't understand is why WGNI can't even afford to hire a midday person, get rid of the 80's weekend and the
theme shows at night, which repeats the same songs over and over.
As for "94.5 The Hawk", i agree it's about time to ditch the "classic hits" format, sell the station, purchase
98.7, and move WAAV to FM, with 100,000 watts, it could be quite beneficial and give "The Big Talker FM"
some competition.

Not that it matters much, but the WAAV call letters used to be on FM - 102/.7 when it first signed on in 1971. WGNI calls were at 1340AM from way back in 1945. FM was "Beautiful Music" until the early 1980s and AM was Top 40 and AC.

It's easy to do. Go to allaccess.com and you will see ratings for Neilson, Arbiton and I forgot the name of the third company. Once you're logged in look at the ratings for WKXB and WKXS in both the Neilson and Arbitron books. Sunny has some interesting results as well.

Also if you go to www.arbitron.com there are links that will take you to the latest "Spring 2010" ratings, i've seen them and were quite surprised by the numbers, especially for "Jammin 99.9" and "Double Q 101", one thing you
can say about country music listeners, they are loyal.

Eastlan?

As far as WGNI dropping the 80's weekends, 90's and 9, etc.: As long as they're cleaning their competitors' clocks, they'll probably use that as an excuse to keep these features... not to mention keep the mdiday shift unstaffed. If it ain't broke...

I have nothing against the people at 104.5; I just don't understand how Sunny stays on the air. Look at all the points I made earlier. Lite 98.7 didn't even last eight months and it was a similar format with a blowtorch of a signal; I say this because it was brought up that Sunny should improve their signal but I don't see that helping matters as far as ratings are concerned. The fact is GNI will always wipe the floor with anyone that even tries to be like them; the books speak for themselves. How is a small signal like 104.5 going to compete with a well oiled 100.000 watt staple... Sunny is a good effort on account of Sunrise but I just don't understand their logic. One more point I read an article a while ago that I wish I could find. It was a newspaper article from a few days before Sunny went on the air. Someone at Sunrise said that Sunny's playlist would be an exact clone of Mix 101.5 in Raleigh but the station would be Wilmingtonized... what on earth... Wilmington is not Raleigh and it never will be.

This is just a thought but; what if WKXS didn't flip totally away from Classic Hits but morphed into a Greatest Hits format? I know Jammin' has the Greatest Hits name but they can't decide if they are R&B, AC or Dance or Urban. Would The Hawk come out of the 2.xs if they had a wide playlist of Greatest Hits IE CBS FM in NYC or even Y102.9 in Raleigh. If The Hawk were to go Greatest Hits they MUST get a FULL lineup of airstaff. I would hire Brian White as the PD or at least the PM drive and bring Jeff "Goldy" Gold down from Fayattville for mornings: get someone great for middays and run Tom Kent at Night. I would also rename the station and end it with Wilminton's Biggest's Hits. What are your thoughts?
