Bwahahahahahahahahaha. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
NO, I HIGHLY doubt Russell or Ryan are up for the job.

Good Luck to Bobby Knight.

I'm going to need a source on this one. I haven't heard and/or read anything anywhere else that Bobby Knight is leaving. Is this just a joke? Russell is a great guy but there is no way they would consider him for the post and Ryan has no programming experience. NM would more than likely go outside of the station to fill this if it is true which I still am not convinced.

Yes. It's true.

I think Ryan would make a fine Ops Mngr. I don't think that NM can give him what Salem does...or that he would want to go back...

After years of (relative) stability, it seems like Next has been having problems hanging on to talent and management in Crystal Lake (and, to a lesser extent, in Waukegan) in the past few years.

Is there some sort of upper-management issue up there?

Radioperson it is true that Bobby Knight is leaving but the real question you should be asking yourself is how many others will be going too? Who else is planning to jump ship and what is it going to do to both Y-103.9 and especially Star since they already have lost half of their morning show?

i would agree ryan would be great...whoever they hire he/she will be the fourth om in 18 months they have to try to stablize the leadership out there it would seem

NextMedia Crystal Lake

The problem with Star 105.5 is that they was lost their identity and the morning show is terrible. The bagel guy, who was the ops manager, was demoted to do mornings which he hated and bitched about on air. He hired and fired his predesessor..Patrick something, within 2 months. He teamed with Nanette who recently left the station and, on air, acknowledged all she and Bagel did was fight, due to his ego. It is too bad..because she was major market material.

They are now playing 60's and 70s music (which is fine) but still saying...Best Variety of the 80s, 90s and today.
I was flipping last week and heard Bagel say "that was My Girl by the Temptations....Best Variety of the 80s 90s and today". He sounded really stupid given the song he just played was from 1966.

My suggestions...expand the playlist to 60s and on and re-market simply as Best Variety..and fire the Bagel Guy and look for a Michael and Carol team replacement.

Re: NextMedia Crystal Lake

The fact is that the people in McHenry County love "The Bagel Guy". I'm not saying it is right or wrong but they love him. I think it has a lot to do with being proud to have someone working at "their" station who grew up in the area and a lot of it has to do with the fact that he has been there FOREVER. The point is it would be a huge mistake to get rid of him entirely. I agree with you on the positioner change it does sound silly coming out of a Temptations song with the Best Variety of the 80s, 90s, and Today it is probably better to change the music then the positioner though. Nanette left for her own personal reasons which as far as I know had nothing to do with her partner and it certainly was not HIS ego that got in the way. The station is in a bit of a free fall right now but if they get a partner for mornings the rest of the line up is intact and if a good PD/OM is running the show and stays longer than a year they can get better. The problem with that station/cluster has a lot more to do with the company (and how cheap they are) then most of the people who work there.

Gary The Bagel Guy has been there for years. He was there when I found the station sometime in 1995 and it was mostly satellite. I couldn't imagine Star 105.5 without him.

As for the 60s music, they've been doing that since last year. They seem like a pretty decent mainstream AC these days. They have the same voice lady that WSSR does now. My mom (who is a big AC fan) listens to them along with Love FM. <P ID="signature">______________

Re: NextMedia Crystal Lake

The reason NM keeps loosing their great air talent is they don't pay them what they are worth! If they would pay their talent more than $8 hr, and stop having so, so many part timers, maybe people with actual talent wouldn't leave so quick! And yes, Bagel HAS to go!

I'm not sure what a radio station is supposed to pay an hour, but Nextmedia operates suburban stations serving the suburbs and not the city, even if some of the coverage might reach the city. So you can't expect any suburban station to pay what someone at a Chicago radio station would get. Also a suburban station can usually give someone the experience needed to eventually get on a major market radio station. I won't comment about The Bagel Guy since I rarely listen to Star 105.5, especially now that I rarely go up north these days.

whoa there i would agree they have shifted music probably to coincide with the demise of wjmk...and yes the bagel guy is juvinile expecially if you are trying to attract adults but nanette a major market talent no and she had a huge diva ego ...agree need a new morning show and maybe somebody stable and from the market to run things

OM/PD Needed in SUBURBAN CHICAGO!

NextMedia's Suburban Chicago Cluster in Crystal Lake is looking for the next OM/PD to program heritage AC WZSR-FM and new Rhythmic Oldies WWYW-FM. This is one great gig--and I should know, because I'm leaving to pursue a new opportunity. If you like working with passionate people, with a strong management team, and a talented and dedicated air staff, this is the place for you. This is an amazing job, and I'm very sad to be leaving such a wonderful group of people. Are you a creative thinker? Do you know the AC format inside and out? Have you worked with a start-up before? Can you think outside the box? Team player? Trust me, this is a great job.

We'd like to fill this position by mid-September.

Please send your T&R plus philosophies to:

Bobby Knight and/or Dana Jang...

Good luck. NextMedia is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Re: NextMedia Crystal Lake

Looks like Tom from IL STILL has his panties in an uproar over the Bagel Guy.
I have to tell you Tom, from all your posts about Gary you sure do make it look like you have ill feelings towards him.

Were you fired by Gary? Probably.

When it comes to the music, Gary has no control over what's being played. The station's positioner IS The Best Variety of the 80's, 90's & Today. That's the STATION'S POSITIONER, NOT Gary's. Alot of AC's play songs from the 60's & 70's. Gary plays and says what he's told to.

Whether you like Gary or not, he's a staple to the community. He's a staple to the radio station. Like it or not, he is not going anywhere.

pfffft. Nanette, major market talent? Ummm, no. That shows how much you are of a good judge of talent Tom.

agree with the above as much as there can be an institution in mchenry county gary is it....he is a career small market talent and knows and loves it he could never make it (and maybe he doenst want to ) at the major market level

Re: NextMedia Crystal Lake

Whoa ... all of you. NM is not "that" cheap. Bagel is not horrible on the air, just complacent... he should go into sales or promotions...because that's what he does best.

The reason they keep losing talent like Nanette and Bobby.. and even Maryanne earlier this year, was because of personal circumstances...not because they hated the place. I mean...where else can you broadcast from the middle of a corn field and get paid for it? It's gotta be the lowest stress radio gig of all time.

I can't imagine Ryan going back though - he's got a good gig with Salem.

What happened to the promo director? They're looking for a promotions director too! The last one hadn't been there 10 months yet.

IMHO, there's just too many cooks in the kitchen.

Re: NextMedia Crystal Lake

(sigh)
You know I'll probably get scorned for posting here but I'm gonna anyway.

Tom, Tom, Tom. You just don't stop do you. If it's not one thing it's another. You just like to pick, pick, pick, pick, pick, pick.

Ok, Tom. I'll lay it all out for you.

I'm not going anywhere. Nor do I WANT to go anywhere. I'm very happy with NextMedia and from what I know from the TIP TOP of the Corporate Ladder (who were just here last week) to the managerial staff here in Crystal Lake, I'm not going anywhere. Now or anytime soon. So quit wishing.

I've never claimed to be the best person on the air. Nor will I ever be. And you know what Tom.....I'm ok with that. I love my job. The listeners here respond to me very well. I grew up here. I work here. I know this area like the back of my hand. That's what helps me succeed. I am what I am ON the air as I am OFF the air. No fake DJ crap here. DJ's suck.

You seem to hate me so much but you seem to know everything that I do. We must've met. I must've fired you or something.

Did I step on your cat?

Tom, here's the deal. I'll lay it all out here for you. You hate me so much, you think you are are great judgement of talent.

Come on in. I will give you the shot at co-hosting the morning show ANY TIME YOU'D LIKE. Come on in. It'd be fun. We'll chat a bit, play some games, have a few laughs. You can see what it's like on a day to day basis. Come do my job for ONE DAY Tommy Boy. Let's see what you got.

Then we all can post on this board how well you did.

Quit hiding behind your keyboard. If you have something to say you are MORE than welcome to email me anytime you'd like. [email protected]

Heck, I'll give you my personal cell number if you'd like.
Ok, before I get myself in more trouble, I'll stop.

Tom, let's do lunch. My treat Tommy Boy.

Yeah, But what happened to Bobby Knight? Anyone know where he is going?
