Next Media Wilmington no longer exist...At a mandatory staff meeting held yesterday employees were told that Capitol Broadcasting were the new owners..

Sounds like a great deal to me! I know ccb has it's detractors, but here is another example of a smaller, regional company taking over stations in NC. That can only be an improvement.

Today NextMedia Operating, Inc. entered into an agreement with Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc. to sell our Wilmington, North Carolina stations: WMFD-AM, WAZO-FM, WILT-FM, WKXB-FM, WLGD-FM, WSFM-FM. This sale is a strategic opportunity for NextMedia, which will use the proceeds to continue the company’s growth in other markets.

Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc. is a diversified communications company which owns radio, television and real estate interests in North Carolina. Capitol Broadcasting is family-owned and began broadcasting in 1939. They have complimentary assets in Wilmington, NC.

NextMedia will continue to operate these stations until the FCC filings are complete later this year. Jeff Dinetz said, “We are most fortunate to be placing these valuable assets in the hands of a North Carolina broadcaster with a great legacy.”

That is the best thing to happen to Wilmington radio in a long time. NextMedia destroyed those stations after they bought them from Ocean and Sea-Comm.

So they have now broken the Myrtle-Wilmington-Eastern NC cluster of stations. We can only hope they'll sell off ENC next!

I understand that Capital will have to sell off one of the stations in Wilmington within a year after taking ownership per FCC. I wonder which one it will be? I'd love to buy WMFD if available.

This is good news for the industry as a whole.I hope it is good for the employees
who are currently there...

IS this the official press release? Haven't seen it on AllAccess.com or any other website when Googled.

What does all of this mean for Next Media's stations format wise. The Port City REALLY needs a genuine oldies radio station. Next Media was stupid for dumping Kool 98.7 and Rock 104.5

They will probably spin the spanish station to the people who are running it....seems easiest to me

Then dump the alternative format to simulcast WMFD on 98.3 FM. This new company will want a FM for Wolfpack sports

Wonder how many smoking promotions the stations will do? (capitol owns a tobacco company) They should have plenty of Durham Bulls tickets to give away at least

You are aware that tobacco hasn't been processed in that plant in 20 years I hope. CBC redeveloped a property where tobacco was once made... that's all.

Wow! Just yesterday I was listening to WCMC 99.9 in Raleigh and thinking how Capital should pay NextMedia to downgrade WKXB Burgaw, thus allowing the Raleigh station to get full market penetration. I was thinking a small downgrade for WKXB, maybe to 50kw.

And then I read this thread. Wow. This could bring a BIG change to 99.9 in Raleigh.

So here's my thought. Just a guess.

WKXB will be downgraded to a class A 6kw signal and moved out of Burgaw, maybe to Jacksonville, Wilmington, or N. Myrtle Beach, and well away from Creedmoor.

WKXB would be donated to a Religious or Public Broadcaster, keeping the weak station from competing for revenue.
Then WCMC ups its power dramatically - and WRAL-FM finally has a true full-market sister.

However, WCMC will still have to protect 99.3 WZAX in Nashville, N.C. somewhat.
So I wouldn't put a frequency swap with a Curtis/Inner Banks station out of the question.
(Curtis might even get the reduced power 99.9 on the coast if it moves to Jacksonville or New Bern.)

We'll just have to see how this all shakes out. But we all can agree that
1.) Capital wants WCMC's signal to cover the market, and
2.) Capital has to spin-off an FM in Wilmington.

By the way, WKXB isn't the same as it was back in the 80's. Nothing on the coast back then beat 99.9 WVBS and 93.3 WDLX for Top40 Hits.
How lucky did we have it down here!!

IMO it would be a real shame to lose 99.9 from Wilmington, regardless of format.

The biggest thorn in Capitol's side as far as the Creedmoor signal goes is 100.3/High Point. They have second adjacent contour protection that extends well into the Triangle.

I'm not sure if the FCC would allow WCMC to boost their power in Raleigh, but if
Capitol Broadcasting has this in mind, this might be a good move in the long run,
and if they could go 50,000 watts, and WKXB downgrade to 50,000 watts, they
could move the transmitter of 99.9 in Wilmington to Brunswick County, which
would clear the way for this to happen.

The 99.9 transmitter was moved to Brunswick a few years ago. They abandoned the 500' tower in Burgaw for a taller one a bit west of Leland.

There's also a 103.1 soon to come to Rocky Mount (actually Sharpsburg), WNCM, currently licensed to Garysburg, NC up near Roanoke Rapids. Tom Joyner, who used to own 100.7 WTRG (now WRVA-FM) and several southside VA stations, holds the license and is selling to Capitol. The current Garysburg COL is mightly close to Alberta, VA and WWDW 103.1 there.
