Next NFL Blackout Victim: Your 0-4 St. Louis Rams

On the verge of benching quarterback Marc Bulger and an estimated 3,500 unsold tickets as of 12 noon on Thursday, this weekend's Rams/Cardinals matchup will be only the second game to be blacked out in St. Louis since moving from L.A. Previous blackout in the Gateway City was last Christmas Eve vs. the Redskins.

STL Post-Dispatch: It appears that Rams-Cards won't be on local TV

Also from the P-D: A story confirming the blackout, as well as reporting that Rams wide receiver Isaac Bruce attempted to foot the bill for all of the unsold tickets to fend off the game being blacked out. Granted, I'm sure he wouldn't want to do it for their matchups with Cleveland and Atlanta later on... The final two home games against Green Bay and Pittsburgh (a Thursday night game) have been sold out; another home game vs. Seattle still hangs in the balance.

As of 7 AM ET, the NFL TV Distribution Maps page still shows the game scheduled to be carried in Missouri, but will likely switch to the Seattle/Pittsburgh game called by Joe Buck and Troy Aikman at 12 noon local time.

Bit of an irony....The Cardinals originated in Chicago before losing the turf war to the Bears.Despite modest success, they couldnt draw enough fans to stay afloat in St looie, so they moved to Arizona..

Now they are coming back...and nada..lol...

The maps have been updated; St. Louis and Columbia will show Seattle/Pittsburgh.

The City of St. Louis are pretty much the fans of the BASEBALL Cards, rather than the FOOTBALL Cards. Ironically it was the city that had BOTH teams named after the Cards. So, while the Baseball Cards were popular with St. Louis, There were fewer fans rooting for the FOOTBALL Cards, as they fell into misery for every single season they play there. The NFL Cards will always the team that'll continue to SUCK when they come back to the city that was once called home. They play in the same division as does with their current team that called home since 1995, The Rams. Your're right about The Rams. at 0-4, They do SUCK, and in St. Louis, SUCK is the word

Updated again: Columbia will now show the Colts/Bucs game scheduled for late afternoon.

It's even better...

As I was watching the highlights from around the league at halftime, they showed the Arizona/St. Louis clip. They're broadcasting in standard definition! A FOX game no less! :D

The last time an "NFL ON FOX" game aired in SD was the Denver home game, and that was because they couldn't get the HD truck into Denver due to the snowstorm.

Interesting. I don't have HD, so I can't tell the difference by comparing picture quality. Apparently, the way to tell the difference if you don't have HD is to look at the graphic used for the score:

Below is the score graphic for Cardinals/Rams (I remember seeing & noticing this in the 49ers/Broncos game at the end of last season - is that the game you're referring to above?)

And here is the usual NFL on FOX score graphic - I grabbed this from a highlight of Lions/Redskins on the halftime show:

The SD score graphic looks exactly like the score graphic used by FSN. But I'm quite certain that FSN uses that graphic for both SD and HD broadcasts.

If FSN can use the same kind of graphic across the board, why can't FOX do the same? Is there some sort of technical limitation that prevents the HD score graphic from being used on SD broadcasts? I would think that FOX would find a way to make it happen, just for the sake of having a consistent look/identity across the board.

I actually personally prefer the SD-FOX/FSN graphic, because the text is bigger and easier to read.

Yes, that is the game.

Indeed, it is the score bar used by FSN.

I live in the Columbia/Jefferson City market, though I can get a few stations from St. Louis and Kansas City. The radio station where I work weekends is in the Springfield market. So, I was able to keep everyone posted.

When I was stopping off for a bite to eat before heading to work, a guy was sitting at the bar with an Arizona Cardinals jersey. He said he drove to Osage Beach from St. Louis to watch the game since he couldn't get it on TV.

On a related subject, I seem to remember WDAF-TV buying some tickets at Arrowhead Stadium a year or two ago on one of those rare times when the Chiefs were on Fox due to playing an NFC opponent. I doubt you'd see that happen this season. Both WDAF and KTVI are for sale, and that may have been part of why KTVI didn't help foot the bill for the unsold seats.

Now that's definitely something you don't see every day.

I wonder if he is a Cardinals fan from Arizona, or if he has been a fan of the Cardinals since they were in St. Louis.

So does anyone know why AZ/STL was in SD and using FSN style graphics? There were no weather issues (that I know of).

I asked him about that. He said he was a Kurt Warner fan and felt like the Rams let him go because of his faith in Christ. I disagree with him on that (Kurt's numbers stunk his last couple years in St. Louis, and he was average in New York), but I'll give him credit for being a true fan.

Does it still cost significantly more to produce a HD broadcast as opposed to a SD broadcast? If so...with such a small percentage of FOX affiliates in the country carrying this game - and a presumably tiny audience viewing on DirecTV - perhaps FOX felt that it wasn't worth offering this game in HD.

I think it's safe to assume that SD broadcasts, at least with the way things are current set up, are supposed to have FSN-style graphics. Why that's the case remains the answered question.
